Julia G. Schaapveld, 60, of Iowa City, died suddenly February 6, 2025, at her home. A gathering will be held from 3-5 PM on Friday, February 21, 2025, at Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service (Iowa City). In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Ben Schaapveld to assist him in caring for Julia’s family.
Julia was born on March 12, 1964, in Iowa City, IA, the daughter of Larry Pelkey-Cole and Bonnie Wenman. She was united in marriage to Benjamin Schaapveld and was a devoted wife. She loved Ben more than words can express. She loved spending time with Ben – camping, going to the casino, or just hanging out at home. She would say they needed a vacation.
Julia was the best momma! Life was always an adventure with her – cruising in any vehicle she could find, ditch hopping, jamming out to Stevie Nicks, with lots of laughter. She cared, loved and protected everyone around her so deeply. Through family cookouts, camping, and huge bonfires she brought everyone together. She was rock and glue; she was fun and always up for anything. Any friends her kids brought home became her kids. She was a safe mom, and her door was always open. There was not a time in her life that she wasn’t caring for her kids and others. Julia adored her grandbabies; they were her everything. She would soak up all the time she could get with them. She would go to the gas station and buy a bag full of meat sticks, snacks and slushies for all of them (as well as herself). She loved slushies! Whether you were hungry or not, she fed you.
Julia is survived by her husband, Benjamin Schaapveld; three children: Joshua Wenman, Amanda (Jason) Schutte and Dustin (Ashley) Snyder; furry companion, Boo; grandchildren: Joshua Wenman Jr., Guy Seelhammer, Jasmine Schutte, Cody and Willow Schutte, Chyanne Linnell, Dallas Walker, Caleb, Tessa, Zayden and Aryanna Synder, and many more that she took in; father, Larry Pelkey-Cole; and siblings: James, Christopher, Stephanie, and Adam Cole.
Julia was preceded in death by her mother.
