Hi Claire,
My 2nd Great Grandfather is James Sanford Doughty. I have done a fair amount of research on his line. There are a few loose ends, but James S. Doughty's father is John W Doughty, married to Grace Ann (Gracie, Gracy Ann, Gracie Ann) Hutton. I believe that the "W" in John Doughty's name is "Wesley."
Current research has listed a John W Dougherty married to Grace Hutton, Wesley Douty married to Graney Ann Hutton, Levi Doughty to Grace Hutton. All three share the same birthdate. I found John W Doughty in the 1840 Census and the 1850 Census married to Grace Hutton. Obviously, they are one in the same. I have an article from the History of Jefferson County listing John W as the father of 9 children, one of whom is Calvin Hayden Doughty. Alvin S, Mary E, and Benjamin Franklin Doughty are listed but 5 others are not named in this biographical sketch. I felt James Sanford, my direct line had to be one of the boys and he was, as confirmed in the 1850 Jeff Co Census. Please let me know if you have other questions.
