Will try and explain the county homes in Iowa.
I think ours started about l865, and was the home to poor people with no income, and also the insane that were not bad enough to be in the state insane assylm which we have one yet in the next county to the east at Mt.Pleasant.At this point imagine she was a poor widow?
At the present time the county home has been sold and no longer run by the state. Years ago they had a nice farm, growing crops and animals for slaughter to eat and huge gardens which the inmates took care of and canned for their own consumption. Then new rules set in and the farm land was sold, the inmates could NOT work in the kitchen, and in recent years those able (ages range from about 2l to 7l) were taken every day to work at a place here called TENCO where they do piece work for local industries. (like putting tiny parts in plastic bags for retail) And at present all
inmates many young retarded in our county have been moved into supervised living facilities right in the town of Fairfield. In looking at our cemetery book, where is her husband John buried?
