MRS. HOLT PASSED AWAY LAST NIGHT.

Mrs.' Samuel HOLT passed peacefully away last night about ten o'clock at her home on West Burlington street after an illness extending over a period of several years.

Elma MERRICK HOLT was born in Bucks county, Penn., May 21, 1838. She was married to Samuel HOLT in Philadelphia July 3, 1863. Five children were born of this union, two of whom survive, Mrs. Joe C. JAMES of Monmouth, Ill., and Anna HOLT of this city.

Mr. and Mrs. HOLT have lived in Iowa 41 years, a part of the time in Henry county, but the larger part in Jefferson county. They have been in Fairfield 22 years.

Mrs. HOLT had been broken in health for about eight years, and for four years had been much of the time a great sufferer. In it all she has been an example of gentleness and patence. The devoted affection of her husband and daughter has found the task of caring for her sweetened by the cheerfulness in which she has met the burden of suffering which has been hers.

During the months of her illness she has been tenderly watched over and shielded from the least discouraging thing by the husband of her youth. Almost constantly has he been at her side. The last hours of her life Mr. HOLT and Miss Anna spent at the bed side of their loved one. Quietly and almost without warning the Death Angel come and called her home.

The passing of this excellent woman from this earth leaves a loneliness not only in the little home but also in the hearts of numberless friends in this city.

In early life Mrs. HOLT became a member of the Congregational church and during all the years of her residence here she was a faithful member of the Congregational church. She had endeared herself to all the attendants of the church by her unwavering faith.

The funeral services will be held Sunday afternoon at three o'clock at the Congregational church conducted by Rev. Pearse Pinch. Rev. A. F. Marsh who was pastor here while Mrs. HOLT was still able to attend church, will preach the sermon(.) The remains will be laid to rest in Evergreen cemetery.

Death of Mrs. Samuel HOLT.

Elma MERRICK was born in Bucks county, Pa., May 21, 1838. She was married to Samuel HOLT in Philadelphia July 3, 1863. The family moved to Iowa forty-one years ago and have lived in Fairfield the past twenty-two years. five children were born to Mr. and Mrs. HOLT, two boys and three girls. Two of the daughters survive their mother, Miss Anna HOLT of this city and Mrs. Joe C. JAMES of Monmouth, Ill. Mrs. HOLT had been in broken health for a number of years, being very much enfeebled and a great sufferer the past four years. Death came as a release Thursday night of last week at 10 o'clock.

Mrs. HOLT was a woman of quiet, cheerful disposition, and in her long and painful illness she has shown a fortitude and patience that lightened the depressing burden all the way. Her husband has attended upon her with a beautiful devotion in all this time of suffering, and the daughter has given herself with all a daughter's love. They well know that, although her death leaves a great blank in place of the sweet service they have been giving, yet it is good for her that the end has come.

The funeral service was held Sunday afternoon in the Congregational church, of which she has been a member since early life. Rev. Pinch, the pastor, was assisted by Rev. A. F. Marsh, who was the last pastor under whom she was able to attend services. Mr. Marsh spoke in most appropriate terms of the good and gentle life. The burial was in Evergreen cemetery.
