George M. HOLMES, 70, 307 E. Fillmore Ave., died at 3 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 23, 1994, at Jefferson County Hospital.
HOLMES was born Feb. 10, 1924, in Birmingham, the son of Elmer and Suzie KENNEDY HOLMES. He married Norma TELLER March 14, 1948, in the First Presbyterian Church in Fairfield.
He attended Fairfield schools and Parsons College. He was a lineman and then area manager for United Telephone Co. until his retirement.
A U.S. Army veteran of World War II, he was a communication specialist with the 34th Army Division in Italy. He was a member of the National Guard until his 1965 retirement after 20 years of service.
Active in the community, HOLMES helped organize the Fairfield Little League and was a past board president. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Clinton Masonic Lodge, Order of Eastern Star, a life member of the Independent Telephone Pioneer Association, a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars and Elks Lodge 1192.
Survivors include his wife, Norma of Fairfield; one daughter, Mary REED of Fairfield; one son, Stephen HOLMES of Jefferson City, Mo.; four grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; and two brothers, Ben HOLMES of Fairfield and Warren HOLMES of Fairfax, Va.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Glen and Wendell HOLMES, and one sister, Byrl McINTIRE.
The funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the First Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Richard Wallarab officiating.
Cremation will follow with burial of cremains in Evergreen Cemetery at a later date.
Open visitation will be all day Friday until 8 p.m. at Behner Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the First Presbyterian Church.
