German Money

STOLLEY AND DIGEL

In 1872 my Stolley Great Grand parents and in 1883 my Digel Great Grandparents came from Germany to Iowa. The Digel's bought 155 acres of farm land and paid cash soon after they arrived so they apparently brought money with them. When they exchanged German money for U.S. money in 1872 and 1883 did they gain or loose money or was it an even exchange?
