Christian Gauss where did he immigrate from

My great, great, grandfather is Christian Gauss (1824-1903) respected farmer in Wapello, Luisa, Ia. His children included George C., Mary Stevens, & Anna. He was married to Christine. Christian was born in Germany and I am trying to find out more about his journey to Iowa. Where was he born and how did he get to Iowa? I believe he arrived in the US in 1852 (per 1900 Census). I am not finding any immigration records.
