Janet,
I'm not sure that your Meader family lived in Iowa County. You may want to post your message on the Shelby and Polk County message boards.
On a whim I had a quick look in the 1900 census and, besides a listing of the family (and John Jr. referred to as "Early M. Meader"!), I find that it appears to tell the story of a railroad being built or torn apart. There are quite a few boarders from Italy listed as "R. R. Laborer". Your own John G. is a "buyer of old iron" if I am reading it correctly.
1900 Census, Iowa, O'Brien County, Waterman Township, Sutherland Town, pg 178B, dwelling 32, taken 2 June 1900:

Meader, Rosa M., Wife, b. Feb 1872, age 28, married 5 yrs, 2 born 2 living, b. IA, fthr b. Germany, mthr b. Germany
Frost, Charles H., Boarder, b. Mar 1849, age 51, divorced, b. NY, fthr b. NY, mthr b. NY, Buyer of old iron
Wilkins, Horace, Boarder, b. Mar 1871, age 29, divorced, b. IA, fthr b. VT, mthr b. IA, Buyer of old iron
Meader, Early M., Son, b. Dec 1894, age 5, b. IA, fthr b. IA, mthr b. IA
Meader, William H., Son, b. Oct 1898, age 1, b. IA, fthr b. IA, mthr b. IAGood luck in your search.
Steve
