Jim was born on March 23, 1936, in Grinnell, IA to Ernest Carl, Jr. and Dorothy Louise (Morrison) Timm. Jim was raised on the family farm north of Ladora and graduated from Victor High School. He continued his education at Iowa State. Following graduation, he moved to Koszta, IA where he worked in construction and for Iowa County Extension as a 4-H youth assistant. After eight months, he moved to Fort Sill, OK for his six months military obligation. He started his career at the Federal Land Bank in Lanesboro, MN, as a loan lender before returning to Ladora, IA, to manage his family crop and livestock farm. Jim stayed busy raising cattle, hogs, and growing corn, soybeans and hay. A committed community member, Jim served on numerous boards including Patrons Insurance as President, Hawkeye Insurance, Iowa Pork Producers, REC, Iowa State University Extension Council, HLV Alumni Association, fair board, military selective service and the 4H Committee. His dedication to 4H was profound in shaping his life, having met his Honey Creek Honey Sweetheart, Gwendalyn Beyer, there. The couple married on December 28, 1957, at Christ Methodist Church in Belle Plaine, IA.
Jim was known for his caring and hardworking nature, always ready to lend a hand. He was a devout member of St. James Lutheran Church, where he also served on several church boards. His hobbies included traveling with his wife, Gwendalyn, both domestically and internationally. A talented builder, Jim constructed his own home and delighted in crafting doll houses. He had a passion for photography, civil war history, and genealogy, particularly in exploring his family’s connection to John Wayne.
Jim is survived by his wife, Gwendalyn Timm; his sister, Julie (Dave) Read; sister-in-law, Bess Timm; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ernest, Jr. and Dorothy Timm; brothers, Don Timm and his wife Judy, and Jerry Timm; and nephew, Daniel Carl Timm.
