Volkerts, Johnsons, to Get First Baby of 1963 Prizes
[Gregg Duane Johnson – second baby born]
The first baby of 1963 is Marguerite Ann Volkert, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Allen Volkert, Odebolt. She weighed 6 pounds, 10 ounces, was 19 inches long and was born at 12:30 a.m. Jan. 4. Her father works for the creamery in Odebolt. Due to a misunderstanding of the contest rules by unknown individuals, it was previously announced that Gregg Duane Johnson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Duane Johnson, Ida Grove, was the winner. For this reason, and for this year only, the participating merchants have elected to give duplicate prizes to both parents. Gregg Johnson weighed 9 pounds, 6 ½ ounces, and was 21 ¾ inches long at birth. He was born at 2:24 p.m. January 4. His father works for the Co-op, Inc., Ida Grove. Both babies were delivered by Dr. Thomas Hutcheson, Ida Grove, in the Ida Grove Hospital. The parents will receive the following gifts from these Ida Grove merchants: Moore furniture, high chair pad; Fouts Skelly, grease job and oil change; Coast-to-Coast, gifts; Dreier’s Bakery, cake for the coming home party; Meisners, baby blanket; Bo-Peep Shop, $3 gift; Penny’s Store, gift; Ida County State Bank, $25.00 savings bond, Golden Rule Store, $2.50 baby food; Brower Furniture, $5.00 credit; Ida Grove Dairy, milk tickets; Penny’s Studio, 8x10 browntone picture. Both parents will receive a letter of certification to be presented for the gifts. Editor’s note: At press time the Pioneer Record learned that Marguerite Ann Volkert died in a Sioux City Hospital Tuesday night. Under the contest rules, the family is still eligible for the prizes.
