Obituary
Funeral services were held at St. John’s Catholic church Wednesday at 9:30 a.m. for the Rev. Hugh O’Brien, 43, pastor her ten years, who died Sunday following a heart attack. The pontifical requiem high mass was celebrated by the Most Red. Edmond Heelann, bishop of the Sioux City diocese, assisted by the Right Rev. Monsignor, T. J. Davern of Ft. Dodge. The deacon was the Rev. John Ryan of Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, a cousin of Father O’Brien and the sub-deacon was the Rev. George O’Brine of Ruthven. The deacons of honor were: Rev. George Wessling, Pocahontas, and Rev. J. P. McGuire of Clare. The Rt. Rev. Monsignor J. J. Berger of Sioux City was master of ceremonies, assisted by the Rev. Harry Daily, Pocahontas, and Rev. James Duhigg of Livermore. Honorary pallbearers were the Rev. C. P. Sweeney of Ft. Dodge, the Rev. D. J. Tewel of Rolfe, the Rev. James Gretteman of Manson, the Rev. J. J. Hyland of Manilla and the Very Rev. W. F. Mason of Emmetsburg. Priests of the diocese sang the office at 9:30 o’clock before the mass. They were directed by the Rev. Joseph Fitzpatrick of Humboldt. The priests choir of the diocese, directed by the Rev. Frank Schultes of Cherokee, sang before the mass. The Rev. Skahill of Boone, organist. Attendance at the funeral included between 30 and 100 priests of the diocese. Before the hour of the rites a procession advanced from the rectory to the church with priests leading the way, followed by the officiating clergymen. The Right Rev. Monsignor Ives, superintendent of schools in the diocese, preached the eulogy which was in harmony with Father O’Brien’s humble spirit. He also dwelt on the works of charity and the devotedness which Father O’Brien bestowed on the congregations he served. A message was also expressed to Father O’Brien’s mother in Ireland.
