Mr. and Mrs. Henry Katter Honored by 6 children Monday – Couple feted by six daughters and families and other relatives.
First of two Garner couples to reach the sixtieth anniversary of their wedding this month Mr. and Mrs. Henry Katter, sr., were honored Monday, December 19, at a dinner an open house in the afternoon and an evening reception. Members of the Katter family, a few intimate friends and the Rev. and Mrs. William Huenemann were entertained at a bounteous noon meal Monday in the home of Mr. and Mrs. George Goll, where Mr. and Mrs. Katter are residing this winter.
“Only Trust” was played as a piano prelude by Mrs. Walter Woiwood as the guest were being seated. This was followed by a talk on the 71st psalm by Rev. Mr. Huenemann, pastor of the Peace Reformed church of which both Mr. and Mrs. Katter are charter members. Leona and Eunice Schroer played “Have Faith in God” as a clarinet and cornet duet, after which they joined in singing it with Mrs. Woiwood as accompanist. The “Hymn of Thanks” was played as a recessional.
A beautiful three-tiered wedding cake baked by a daughter, Mrs. Woiwood, was featured as a center-piece at the table at which the honored couple and their entire family were seated. The dinner and the open house in the afternoon were arranged by the children.
It was Dec. 19, 1878, that Henry Katter and Miss Anna Meyer, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Meyer, were married at the brides home southeast of Garner by the Rev. F. Mosebach, first pastor of the Ell township Reformed church. They were first of that congregation to be united in marriage.
Mr. Katter came to Hancock county from Ohio in 1875 and his wife, who was born in Wisconsin, came here one year earlier, in 1874. Of the eight children born to the union (next line of text unreadable) Monday’s festivities.
They are Anna, now Mrs. Henry Kirchhefer; Tillie, now Mrs. Otto Schlawin; Minnie, now Mrs. George Goll; Amelia, now Mrs. Otto Schroer; Selma, now Mrs. Walter Woiwood; LaVon, Luella and Rachel, children of Mrs. Henry Katter jr.; and Calvin and Celia, children of Mr. and Mrs. Gredlow. There were also 10 great grandchildren in the family.
More distant relatives who attended the dinner Monday were Mr. and Mrs. August ***berkamp (first part of the name unreadable), Mr. and Mrs. Charles Goll, Mr. and Mrs. George Grieman and Mr. and Mrs. Wesley Lenz and Mrs. Henry Griesemer, all of Garner, and Grandma Schlawin and Mrs. Charles Kraus of Klemme.
Mr. Katter has two brothers and tow sisters. The brothers are August and Fred Katter, and the sisters are Mrs. Will Wittenberg and Mrs. Tillie Huenemann. Mrs. Katter has one brother Julius Meyer, and a sister, Lizzie Barthlamus of Idaho. The brothers, sisters and friends presented the honored couple with a purse Monday.
To climax the day, nephews and nieces of the couple came and sang Christmas carols in the evening. They were invited in and were treated to ice cream, cake and coffee.
