In the past week two pioneers of Webster City have passed away. J. D. Sketchley died Thursday morning of last week, at the age of almost 90 years. He had lived in this county about 68 years, was one of the first business men of Webster City, the last survivor of those who voted for the first list of county officers of Hamilton county after Hamilton and Webster counties were divided, and the last of the famous Border Brigade who went to the defense of settlers after the Spirit Lake Indian massacre.

First Coffinmaker in Northwest Iowa Dies at Webster CityWebster City, Ia., Feb. 6. — J. B. Sketchley, 90 years old, one of Iowa's most prominent spiritualists, died here yesterday. Sketchley was the first undertaker and coffinmaker in northwestern Iowa. He lived here since 1857 and was the last member in the county of the famous northern border brigade. The pioneer died in this same building he erected 50 years ago. Sketchley recently presented Webster City with a 12 acre wooded tract for a memorial park on Grant highway. The deceased made all the furniture used by the early settlers here. He also invented and built the first fanning mill ever used in this district. He was married twice but left no direct heirs.
