Death of Wm. Batchelor.
On Monday, July 29, 1895, surrounded by a loving family, Wm. Batchelor departed this life, in the fullness of years, and has gone to his final reward. His death was calm and peaceful, like a tired child going to sleep. His death removes from this community one of our best and most honored citizens.
Deceased was born in Dundee, Scotland, Sept. 1st, 1815, and was therefore 79 years, 10 months and 28 days old at the time of his death. He was married to Jane Hay, on Feb. 10, 1838; joined the Masonic order in Scotland in 1870; came to Illinois the same year and to Iowa in 1872; has lived in Jewell during the past 12 years and was a charter member of Republic Lodge, No. 468, A. F. & A. M., of Jewell; was a member of the Presbyterian church of Scotland for 20 years and died a true Christian. His aged widow and six children survive him--four sons and two daughters, one son and one daughter having preceded him to the spirit world. The remains were buried in the Jewell cemetery, with Masonic honors, on July 31st, 1895--Rev. Bro. Clearwater preaching an eloquent and beautiful sermon.
The following resolution of condolence and respect were adopted at the last regular meeting of Republic Lodge, No. 408:
To the Worshipful Master, Wardens and Brethren, of Republic Lodge No. 408, A. F. & A. M.
