Death of B. A. Lakin
B. A. Lakin, one of Hamilton county's earliest pioneers and a man who had a prominent part in the early development of this section of the state, passed away at 9:15 o'clock last Friday morning, May 7th, at the home of his son, Ben Lakin, at Dows, Iowa. His wife, his son Ben, and daughter, Mrs. S. A. Stolp, were with him at the end. Mr. Lakin had bee in failing health for the past two years, and as he neared the end he bade the members of his family goodbye and expressed himself as ready to go.
The body was brought to Jewell where funeral services were held Sunday at 12:30 o'clock at the home of his daughter, Mrs. S. A. Stolp, and at two o'clock services were held at Homeward [sic] cemetery at Ellsworth, where the body was laid to rest in the family burial plot. Rev. Whitlock, of the M. E. church at Jewell, and Rev. Ross of Des Moines, pastor of the Christian church at Jewell, officiated.
B. A. Lakin, son of Mr. and Mrs. Elisha Lakin, was bornin Pennsylvania, June 5, 1835, being 79 years, 11 months and 2 days of age at the time of his death. He was married in 1855 to Miss Abigail Fuller, of DeKalb, Ill., and in the same year moved to Hamilton county, Iowa, settling near where the town of Ellsworth is now located in what has become known as Lakin's Grove. In the early days there was a settlement of considerable size there that approached closely to the dignity of a town, and Mr. Lakin was one of the most prominent and influential men of that community. He has been a farmer practically all of his life and continued to live in and near Ellsworth until two years ago when he went to Dows to reside at the home of his son.
There were fourteen children born to Mr. and Mrs. Lakin of whom seven survive. They are: Oscar, of Ruthven, Melvin of Moscow, Idaho, Mrs. S. A. Stolp, of Jewell, Henry, of Spooner, Wis., Mrs. Abbie Wheaton, of Troda, Wash., Ben, of Dows, and Glen, of Jewell. The wife also survived her husband, also one brother, Charles, of Green Acres, Wash., and one sister, Mrs. Polly Watkins of Oto, Iowa.
