Hans Lilland Is Dead
Mr. Hans Lilland, who had been suffering for the past five years from cancer, passed away at midnight Monday night of this week, at his home in Jewell. Funeral services will be held tomorrow, Friday afternoon, at two o'clock from the home and from Bethesda Lutheran church, conducted by the pastor. Rev. Martin Norstad, and the body will be interred in Evergreen cemetery.
Hans Lilland, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ole Ellefson Lilland, was born in Skjold, Norway, April 8, 1849, and died at Jewell May 10, 1915, aged 66 years, 1 month, and 2 days. He came to America in 1870, locating in New Sharon, Iowa June 29th of that year. He also lived for a short time in Story county, Iowa, where he was married to Miss Liva Lee in the spring of 1878. In 1879 he moved to Hamilton county, locating on the farm southwest of Jewell where he lived ever since until he moved to Jewell six years ago.
Five children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Lilland, the wife and all five children surviving. The children are: Mrs. Martin Sampson, of Huxley, Ole, of Armstrong, Iowa, and Bertha and Henry, of Jewell. Mr. Lilland is also survived by a brother, Simon, who lives at Dolliver, Iowa, and several other brothers and sisters living in Norway.
Three years ago Mr. Lilland went to Rochester, Minn., to be operated on for cancer that had then been troubling him for about two years. A year later he was taken to a hospital in Chicago. He was examined by some of the best surgeons in the world at these places, but nothing could be done for him. Last spring and summer his suffering lessened a great deal and he seemed to gain remarkably in strength, but for several months past he has failed steadily and suffered a great deal the past winter and spring.
Mr. Lilland was a faithful member of Bethesda Lutheran church, and was a good husband and father and a good neighbor. Everyone who knew him regarded him as a friend, and his loss will be deeply regretted by all in the community.
