Thelma Richey, Panora
Thelma Evelyn Halling Richey, 100, daughter of Roy and Lida Halling, was born August 10, 1912 on the family farm, south of Perry, IA. She passed away peacefully on Friday, September 7, 2012 at the Guthrie County Hospital with family by her side.
She graduated from Perry High School. Thelma was united in marriage to Robert E. Richey on May 15, 1938 in Grand Junction, CO. To this union, five children were born. Thelma spent most of her life in Panora, where they owned and operated the Richey Locker Service from 1939 to 1961. She also worked at the Guthrie County Hospital, Panora-Linden School - hot lunch and the Panora Bakery. Thelma was an avid Bridge player and an excellent cook and baker. Everyone loved her sugar cookies, pies, dinner rolls and fried chicken.
She was a long time member of the Panora United Methodist Church, a member of WSO and Eastern Star.
On August 10, 2012, Thelma celebrated her 100th birthday with a party at Lakeside Village, where she lived her final two and a half years. On August 11, 2012, over 80 family members spent a beautiful day celebrating with her at Lake Panorama.
Thelma is survived by her children, William (Linda) Richey of Panora, Thomas (Connie) Richey of Panora, Steven (Sherrie) Richey of Urbandale and daughter-in-law, Mary Anne Richey of Lakewood, WA.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert E. Richey, son, Robert Richey of Lakewood, WA and daughter and son-in-law, Patricia (George Jerome) Robinson of Nevada, IA.
Thelma was blessed with 16 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren and seven great-great-grandchildren. Also, surviving are Thelma's youngest brother, Darrell (Loretta) Halling of Canton, SD, sisters-in-law, Ina Jackson of Omaha and Dorothy Halling of Boone. Preceding her in death are her siblings, Henry, Lester, Bernice, Clifford, Harry and Richard.
Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, September 10, 2012 at Panora United Methodist Church. Burial will be at the West Cemetery in Panora. Visitation will be held on Sunday, September 9, 2012 from 4 to 8 p.m. at Twigg Funeral Home in Panora. Memorials may be made in Thelma's name to the Panora United Methodist Church or Hospice.
