Illinois Central Brakeman
has Narrow Escape.

Charles City, Ia. Jan. 6. – A. W. Abel, an Illinois Central brakeman, had a narrow escape from death at 11 o’clock yesterday morning in the yards here. He was riding a coal car into a siding. As he set the brake the chain broke, precipitating him to the track. In falling he struck a brace on the car and cut a long gash into his face. Had the brake held on the front end of the car he would have met instant death. As it was his face and scalp were terribly lacerated.
