In Response To: Researching Burch (Roger Woodruff)

William D. Burch was the son of James B. Burch, who was among the very first settlers in what would become Oelwein. There is considerable information about the family in the Oelwein History, 1873-1973 that was written for the Centennial Celebration in 1973. Family members contributed the information.

It is said, "Rev. James B. Burch, an honored pioneer of Jefferson township, was born in Surrey County, North Carolina, October 17, 1801. He moved with his parents to Green County, Indiana in 1820." Although in sad shape, the log cabin that the family built, still stands near the business district of Oelwein. Postcards with photos of the old log cabin are frequently listed on E-Bay.
