My family arrived in Fayette County in 1865 by mid June (perhaps a couple of months earlier) and stayed until June 1869 when they moved to Western Iowa.
Are there any records from 1865 to 1869 that could substantiate residence? Jan Jansson Haglund and family (wife Annika and 5 children) farmed, likely renting or employed, possibly owned 60 acres, but not verified. If land deed owned, I would like to find location.
Location is hazy. The father built a lime kiln and burnt lime found on the farm. The children visited 2 caves along the west side of the Turkey river, said these were "ice caves" and found running water in one of them. Eldorado was their Post Office but they traded at Clermont.
2 children Carl Johan Haglund (1867), Mathilde Haglund (1869), were born near Eldorado in Fayette County with Baptism Records at Washington Prairie Evangelical Lutheran Church in 1867 #12 listing for March 1867.
There are sponsors listed on Church Baptism records. What was the role of being a sponsor?
