The Morrison Hotel and Two Other
Buildings Destroyed

About 5 o’clock Wednesday morning flames were seen issuing from the roof of the Morrison House, a two story structure near the Chicago Great Western depot at Oelwein and before the fire was under control the hotel and two other buildings were destroyed. The hotel was owned by W. H. Morrison, and valued at $1,600. There was $1,000 insurance on the building in the New York National. It was occupied by Shafer & Clark, who had $670 insurance on household goods in the Dubuque Fire and Marina. About one-half the goods were saved. The two buildings adjoining which were burned, were owned by V. Kander, and valued at $900; no insurance. The cause of the fire was a defective chimney in the office. The town had no fire protection and lack of wind is all that prevented a good share of the town being destroyed.
