Nick and Eva Berg

I am working to track down my ancestors nicholas/nick and eva/eve/evelyn berg, german farmers in dubuque county. Also any family and community they may have moved with.

In the census and plat records they appear near holy cross and graf. Holy Cross is the cemetery they are buried in, see find a grave link. I found several records after they arrived in ~1881, but I am having quite a bit of trouble verifying anything before that. Newspaper records and obituaries are hit and miss. They are not on the land patents as they were not the original owners.

My biggest trouble is finding Eva's maiden name. I have seen so many options including Botts, Bolts, Puetz, Botz, Botzet, Kirsch, Putz, Bootza, etc. In the german typeface B and P look the same so I assume it is partially an issue of translation/transcription error. Possibly some change during immigration as well. The best guess for eva's maiden name is botz or botzet as there are german catholic records that make sense with the dates; or puetz since it shows up in a childs marriage record. The census said they only spoke german, and I found at least one marriage announcement of their daughter lizzie to john foxen (a neighbor) in the Luxembourg Gazette.

Any help would be welcome. Their son george also immigrated with them from germany and appears to have owned land in holy cross at one point. Other children are listed in the immigration record that don't appear anywhere else except to say how many eva had that survived. I have not found any records of their graves or deaths.
