Jim Devaney believes that he is the victim of a deep laid conspiracy, and is still quaking in his shoes over a dastardly attempt to blow him to eternity. Last Sunday evening Jim replenished the fire in the kitchen stove and sat down to toast his shins and enjoy a pleasant siesta. He had no more than comfortably arranged himself before the glowing hearth, when a terrific explosion took place in the stove, the force of which blew the lid off and knocked the pipe out of joint where it enters the flue. Jim turned a somersault over the back of his collar and landed in a confused mass on the floor, thinking that anarchy had broken out a fresh in the land. Some of the firewood, probably, contained a charge of powder, fixed up by some practical joker.
