Leo G. Summers

Leo G. Summers, 83, son of Benjamin and Laura Jones Summers, was born May 27, 1899, in Scotland County, Missouri and departed his life Saturday morning, September 18, 1982, at the Scotland County Memorial Hospital, Memphis, Missouri.

Leo was united in marriage to Clara Louis Struble, September 14, 1919, in Scotland County. To this union two children were born, Harold and Helen.

Mr. Summers lived and farmed his entire life in Scotland County. In 1924 with his older brother, Orlo, they were among the first to establish a herd of Polled Hereford Cattle in this area.

When a young man, Leo became a member of the United Methodist Church.

Prior to and after his retirement, Leo was active in the hybird seed corn business for many years.

Preceding him in death were his parents, two brothers, Orla and Floyd, one sister-in-law and one granddaughter, Patricia Ranee.

He is survived by his wife, Clara, one son Harold, Downing, Missouri; one daughter, Mrs. Wayne (Helen) Newman, Memphis, Missouri; six grandchildren, Phillip Summers, Hamilton, Illinois, Mrs. John (Ann) Kelley, Kirksville, Missouri; Karen Baird, Lancaster, Missouri, and David, Richard, and Robert Newman of Memphis, Missouri; ten great-grandchildren, Jack, Todd, Daniel, and Jennifer Kelley, Gina and Laura Baird, Phillip and Joshua Summers, Joshua Newman and Niki Newman; one sister-in-law, Irene Summers; nieces, nephews, and many friends.

Services were conducted Monday, September 20, 1982, at 2 p.m. from the Payne-Gerth Chapel, Memphis, Missouri, with the Rev. Ron White officiated. Organist was Ann Luther and soloist was Guy Gardine. Burial was in the Memphis Cemetery. Body bearers were Jim Morris, Gerald Courtney, John Aylward, Olin Boyer, Robert Schlotter and Don Norton.
