I'm pretty sure that Carl and Marie met and married in Germany. According to the 1910 census, Carl immigrated in 1873. But he and Marie said they'd been married 39 years, and had 11 children (9 of which were still living by 1910).
On the 1900 census, Carl and Marie say that they've been married 27 years and that they immigrated in 1875. They had 11 children (9 of which were still living by 1900).
They are listed as "Upwall" on the MN 1885 State Census for Lemond/Steele.
Did your Carl perhaps have an uncle or older brother named Fredrik Uptadel? There was a Fredrick who came over in March of 1893 on the ship Munchen. Fridrick, his wife Augusta, Bertha (20) and Wilhelm (17) landed in Baltimore. The ship's list says that they are from "Spandeko" Germany and are headed to "Ocean" Iowa. But I see the son, William, ended up settling in Ellendale, Steele Co. any way, very near your Carl.
