Joseph Carl Beck was born at Elkport, Iowa, December 04, 1895, son of Carl Dietrich and Emilie Beck. At the age of 15 he was confirmed in the Lutheran church at Elkport.
In 1917 he answered the call of the country serving 22 months during World War II. After his discharge Mr. Beck chose farming as his life vocation.
On May 24, 1924 he was united in marriage to Katherine Hochhaus at Littleport. They had four children: Illo, now Mrs. LeRoy Glawe of Edgewood; Gerald Beck of St. Olaf; Ruth, now Mrs. Adam Meidinger of Halliday, N.Dak., and Lyle, at home.
Mr. Beck willingly volunteered in various public work, serving the community in different offices, as member of the school board, the creamery board, the Agricultural Program committee and as an official of the Hope Lutheran church of Littleport.
Mr. Beck's health had been failing for the past seven years. The past six months he spent much of his time in the Veterans hospital at Iowa City where he died March 05. Funeral services were held at Hope Lutheran church of Littleport with the Rev. F. W. Tillmanns officiating and burial was in Union cemetery at Littleport.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and two sisters. Besides his immediate family, survivors are a brother, Clarence B. of Littleport; four sisters, Mrs. Roy Mikel of Springfield, Ill.; Mrs. Ben Noggle of Dubuque; Mrs. Clarence Lau of Fayette; and Mrs. H. . Yiesley of Newton; three aunts, Agnes, Esther and Alma Helbig of Dubuque, and six grandchildren.
