Mrs. Thomas Kelleher, the oldest resident of Elkader, died at her home in Elkader at 10:40 a.m., Friday, Jan. 09, 1953. She celebrated her ninety-seventh birthday Oct. 05 and up until the time of her death had enjoyed good health and an active interest in life. She died Friday morning as she sat in her rocking chair.
Among the out-of-town relatives and friends who attended the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. John Feeney, Francis Feeney, Margaret Stone, Prairie du Chien, Wis., Mr. and Mrs. E. J. Sinott, Fayette; Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Torgeson, Viroqua, Wis.; Misses Coletta and Mae Feeney, Chicago; Art Connor, Clermont; Francis and Will Orr, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Cox, Volga; Mr. and Mrs. Walt Hogan and son Thomas, Dubuque; Mr. and Mrs. Albert Heiden and Lucille, Sioux Falls, S.Dak.
Services were conducted Monday Jan. 12, at St. Joseph's Catholic church, with a requiem high mass. The Rt. Rev. Msgr. B. H. Skahill officiated.
Mary Feeney was born Oct. 05, 1855, in Hollidaysburg, Pa., the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jermiah Feeney. The Feeney family moved to Volga in 1858, where her father conducted a general merchandise store. She was united in marriage with Thomas F. Kelleher at Elkader in 1878.
Mrs. Kelleher is survived by the following children, all of whom were with her at the time of her death: Joe Kelleher, Dubuque; Miss Kathryn Kelleher, Mrs. John Hughes, Mrs. Leo Killerlain, and Harry Kelleher, all of Elkader; and Mrs. Albert Heiden, Sioux Falls, S.Dak. A son, Dr. Geo. Kelleher, preceded her in death Oct. 23, 1933, and her husband died Nov. 10, 1938. Mrs. Kelleher was the last member of the Jermiah Feeney family, four brothers and one sister having preceded her in death.
Mrs. Kelleher was a woman of outstanding personality, a keen mind, and an avid interest in life, and with a host of friends and relatives to mourn her.
Pallbearers were Mike Hurley, Tim Hurley, Leo Roach, John Roach, James Cain and Carl Ehrhardt.
