Henry Freitag, son of Henry and Wilhelmina Freitag, was born November 07, 1868, in Read township, Clayton county, Iowa, and died at the General hospital in Prairie du Chien, Wis., Thursday, December 05, 1957, at the age of eighty-nine years and twenty-nine days.
Mr. Freitag spent his entire life in Clayton county with the exception of sixteen months near Dakin, Nebr. Mr. Freitag was a highly respected citizen of this community. He was one of the ten charter members of the Peace E and R church and served it faithfully throughout the years by his regular attendance of church service, partaking of the holy communion and supporting it financially. He was active in all the affairs of the church and served in a special capacity a number of times. At the organization of the church he was elected a trustee. He was a member of the church council at the time of the laying of the cornerstone for this church. His two daughters, Mrs. August (Loria) Funk, and Mrs. Lorenzo (Irene) Buckman were the only two members of the first confirmation class.
Mr. Freitag enjoyed good health until about two years ago. A year ago on November 07, he was taken to the hospital in Prairie du Chien, where he remained until his death.
The deceased was united in marriage to Dorothea Witte. Four children were born to this union and all survived their father in death. Mrs. August (Loria) Funk of Read township, Mrs. Lorenzo (Irene) Buckman of Elkader, and Harry and Elmer of Read township.
After their marriage, the couple started housekeeping on a farm near Dakin, Nebr., where they remained for sixteen months. Returning to Boardman township, they purchased a farm near the Turkey River and farmed there for thirteen years. Mr. Freitag sold the farm along the Turkey River and purchased the farm in Read township on which his son, Harry and family reside today. This farm was worked for another thirteen years.
In the year 1920, Mr. Freitag was forced to turn over the farm to his son and move to Elkader because of the illness of his wife. He remained in Elkader for four years when he and his wife decided to live with their daughter and son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Gus Funk, so that Mrs. Freitag could receive the care of her daughter. Mrs. Freitag died on January 28, 1925. After the death of his wife he made his home with his children, Mr. and Mrs. Harry Freitag for one year. Since 1926, until last year when he entered the hospital, he and his children, Irene and Lorenzo Buckman resided in Elkader.
Three brothers and one sister preceded him in death. He is survived by the aforenamed children, two grandchildren, Mrs. LaVern (Anna Belle) Zittergruen, and Carl Funk, also one great-grandchild, Carl Funk.
Members of the church council of Peace Evangelical and Reformed church served as pallbearers and were: Dr. L. R. Tappan, Lester Lembke, Harvey Witte, A. H. Johnson, Milo Murphy and Robert Cheeseman.
Funeral services were held Sunday, December 08, at 2 o'clock from Peace E and R church with the Rev. Paul Kitterer officiating.
Burial was in the East Side cemetery.
Out of town relatives attending the funeral were: Mr. and Mrs. Henry Kahle, Mr. and Mrs. Albert Bakes, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Schaal, Mr. and Mrs. Laverl Rodenberg, all of Guttenberg; Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Fehlhafer, Mr. and Mrs. Eddie Fehlhafer, McGregor; Mr. and Mrs. Emil Zittergruen, Garber; Mrs. Evelyn Roredabush, Cedar Rapids; Mr. and Mrs. Herman Kruse, Strawberry Point; Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Schmidt, Mr. and Mrs. Harold Duwe, Mr. and Mrs. Ferdinand Jahnke, Mr. and Mrs. Harvey Backhaus and family, and Mr. and Mrs. Ernie Backhaus, all of Garnavillo.
