John F. C. Harnack's mother was Marie Palas, an older sister of John Palas. John F. C. Harnack was born illegitimate. His parents married after they came to Clayton County. His father is buried on the grounds of the hospital in Independence, Iowa. Legend had it that he was killed by Indians, which is not true.
