Mrs. James Messenger, who has been a patient sufferer for a long time, passed away. She was born in Ohio, April 19, 1815. She was married to Rev. James Messenger in 1831. To this union twelve children were born, five of whom preceded her to the fairer world. Mrs. Philip Aller, of Murray, Mrs. L.H. Rowley, of Woodburn, Mrs. M.M. Power, of Thayer, and Mr. Stephen Messenger, of Murray were present at the funeral and cared for their mother in her last days. Those not able to be here were Mr. W.H. Messenger, of New Port News, Virginia, C.W. Messenger of Maryville, Missouri, and A.J. Messenger, of Bucyrus, Ohio.

The funeral was held from the Baptist church at 11 o’clock Wednesday, February 1st. Rev. Shaw conducted the services. Mrs. Messenger and her husband were charter members of the Baptist church of Murray. She was an earnest, faithful, Christian worker from the age of fifteen years, and a long life spent in the service of Christ and humanity. The floral tributes were lovely. The relatives and friends have the sympathy of the entire community. The body was laid to rest in the Murray cemetery by the side of her husband.

The Murray, Iowa, Union of February 3 records the death of Grandma Messenger, which occurred at her home in that place on January 31, at the age of 83 years, 9 months and 12 days. She was born in Washington county, Pennsylvania, April 19, 1815. She was married to Rev. James Messenger November 3, 1831.

. To them were born twelve children, nine of whom lived to mature yeas, and seven of whom survive their mother. Her husband passed to the farther shore in 1876. The surviving children are
William Messenger, of New Port News, Virginia; C.W. Messenger of Maryville, Missouri; A.J. Messenger, of Bucyrus, Ohio; Stephen C. Messenger, Murray, Iowa; Mrs. M.M. Power, of Thayer, Iowa; Mrs. S.M. Aller, of Murray, Iowa; and Mrs. L.H. Rowley, of Woodburn, Iowa. The funereal occurred on Wednesday, February 1, at Murray.

She came from Pennsylvania with her husband in 1832 to Morrow county, then a part of Richland county, locating near West Point, six mils south of Galion. They resided there about a third of a century, and were well known throughout Morrow county and southern Crawford. Large numbers of friends in Polk and Whetstone townships will be saddened by the news of Grandma Messenger’s death.

She was a woman of lovely disposition and character, pure and sweet in heart and life, and overflowing with kindliness and helpfulness to those about her. The affection felt for her by her neighbors was shown in the fact that to all of them she was “Grandma,” and seldom mentioned by any other name. She was an active church worker from her fifteenth year to the close of her long life. During her residence in Morrow county, she belonged to the Beulah Baptist church. Though she has passed to the other shore, her influence for good yet lives, and can never fade from the minds and hearts of those who knew and loved her.
