Hi Shelley,
If you go to this web page, http://vitalrec.com/ia.html you can see how to get vital records from Iowa. I have not learned of any source where you can go in Chickasaw County for vitals although the county genealogical society might have something and they are worth checking out - see this page - http://iagenweb.org/chickasaw/outsidegeaniesociety.htm - I find it interesting that the WPA records the "Bruce." WPA people did not just look at cemeteries and in many cases looked at other records. So if "Bruce" is not on the headstone then my guess is there was a record somewhere which indicated she was a Bruce. I found the family in 1880 which indicates Mary was born in Maine and several of the children were born in Wisconsin. So in 1860 I find them in Grand Chute, Outagamie Co, Wisc and again it says Mary was born in Maine. I couldn't find them in 1850 either as single or married. Ancestry.com has a record of your Mary Jane Bruce with a marriage or license date of 9 Mar 1852 in Brown County to Scland Vander Bogart (Outagamie was created from Brown). If you don't have the 1860 or 1880 census data I found please let me know and I'll send you the data. Also if you have some other data on them which might help me as a clue/lead please let me know. Wish I could have been more help. Sincerely, Mike Peterson
