Sanfern “Sam” Ordell Mangold, 90, passed away Wednesday, April 22, 1998 at Sioux Valley Memorial Hospital in Cherokee, following a brief illness.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, April 25 at the Memorial Presbyterian Church in Cherokee. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery, Cherokee.

Mr. Mangold was born April 3, 1908, in Linn Grove, Iowa to Fred and Isabelle (Heglund) Mangold. He was educated in Linn Grove and Following graduation worked with his father in Peterson and Linn Grove, dealing with implement sales and service. He moved to Sheldon, Iowa to work with the City Service Super Station until being laid off during the Depression, when he returned to Linn Grove to help his father. He later moved to Cherokee to work with Jack Cannon in the Cherokee City Service Company and ran a bulk gas operation until World War II began. He served with the U.S. Army in the South Pacific during the war. Following the war, he returned to Cherokee to work with Jack Hulbert Plumbing. He later bought the business and ran it as Mangold Plumbing and Heating, retiring in 1968. After retiring, he drove cars for Peterson Motor Co., Brown Auto Supply and Holzhauer Motor Co. He also worked for Lee’s Hardware during the holiday season. On August 8, 1948, he married Faye Nelson in Sioux City, Iowa. He was a former director of Sioux Valley Savings and Loan for 27 years, on the Cherokee City Council for three years, former member of the Kiwanis and commander of the American Legion.

Survivors include a brother Wilford Mangold and his wife Oma, Armstrong, Iowa; a stepson, Bobby Tombollo; a sister-in-law, Lorrane Mangold, Brandon, South Dakota; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Faye on June 22, 1984; three brothers and a sister. (Source: Former Cherokee County Historical Society scrapbook clipping hand dated 4-23-98)
