Richard G. "Dick" Means, 76, Cherokee, died Friday, April 6, 2001, in Sioux Valley Memorial Hospital, Cherokee, following a long illness. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, April 10 in St. Paul's United Methodist Church, Cherokee. Burial will be in the Oak Hill Cemetery in Cherokee. There will be military rites at graveside by Veterans of Foreign Wars Wescott Post #2253.

He was born June 14, 1924, at Marcus, to Humphrey and Lena Schwartzwelder Means. He graduated from Meriden High School in 1942. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Coast Guard from 1942 until 1946. He was married to Constance Peck on Feb. 1, 1947, at Sioux City. He worked for Rock Island Lumber Co. for 17 years, serving as manager in Cleghorn, Marcus and Cherokee. He sold real estate for Timmins Real Estate for a few years. He owned and operated Means Paint and Wallpaper for five years and was cemetery superintendent at Oak Hill Cemetery for a number of years.

He retired in 1985, and then worked for Rhoadside Greenhouse delivering flowers. He had lived in Cherokee the past 43 years and was a life-long resident of Cherokee County. He was a member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church and was a life-member and Past Commander of V.F.W. L. A. Wescott Post #2253. He was an avid sports fan and enjoyed watching his grandchildren and great-grandchildren participate in sporting events.

He is survived by his wife, Constance; three sons and two daughters, Danny and his wife Pam Schuver, Cherokee; Dwight Means and his wife Pat, Scottsdale, Ariz.; Julia and Doug Miller, Cherokee; Paul Means and his wife, Marcene, Brainerd, Minn.; and Robin and David Schonrock, Sioux City; 10 grandchildren, Amy Schuver, Jeff Schuver, Heather Means, Dawn Coombs, Damon Miller, Danae Miller, Matthew Means, Mitchell Means, Jared Schonrock and Megan Schonrock; three great-grandchildren, Timothy Jones, Tyler Jones and Justus Schuver; eight brothers and one sister, Percy and Bonnie Means; Vernon and Gladys Means, all of Marcus; Bobbie Means, Corpus Christi, Texas; Walter Means, Duarte, Calif.; Billy and Susan Means, Green Valley, Ariz.; Joe and Carolyn Means, Sioux City; Herbert and Sandy Means, Desert Hot Springs, Calif.; and June Cave, Tempe, Ariz.; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a son Ronald LeRoy Means in 1968; three brothers Paul, James and Michael; and two brothers in infance.
