Funeral services for Hilbert J. Long, 97, Tipton, were held Jan. 24, 1989 at the Cedar Street Baptist church, with the Revs. Win Johnson and Brian Johnson officiating. Jim Schneider was the vocalist and Linda Marshall was the organist. Pallbearers were Ben Marolf, Robert Bennett, Dan Long, Darryl Martin, Patrick Taylor, John Dolan and Kent Long. Burial was in the National cemetery in Rock Island, Ill., with graveside services.

Mr. Long died Jan. 19 at Cedar Manor nursing home, following an extended illness.

The son of Aaron J. and Margaret E. Hill Long, he was born Dec. 25, 1891 in Adair county, Iowa. He attended rural Cedar county schools and McPherson Academy. He married Zella Benedict Feb. 19, 1921 in Cedar Rapids. She preceded him in death in June 1987.

Mr. Long was self-employed, sharpening discs and mower equipment. He was a lifetime resident of Tipton, moving here in 1897.

He served in the United States Army in both the Mexican Border conflict and World War I. He was a member of the Berean Bible Fellowship, a life member of the VFW and World War I veterans and the Cedar County Historical Society.

Mr. Long is survived by 5 daughters, Mrs. Dale (Dorothy) Taylor, Cedar Rapids; Mrs. Joseph (Marjorie) Dolan, Wausau, Wis.; Mrs. Wayne (Becky) Martin, Mt. Vernon; Mrs. Harlan (Nancy) Marolf, Montclaire, Calif. and Mrs. Willard (Jo) Bennett, Lisbon; 2 sons, Vernon, Eldridge and J. B., Whittier, Calif.; a sister, Hattie Meyers, Bullhead City, Ariz.; 43 grandchildren; 50 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great-grandchildren;.

He was preceded in death by his wife, a daughter, 2 sisters and 2 brothers.
