Funeral services for Lester N. Gill, 91, former Cedar county superintendent of schools, were held at First United Church of Christ Nov. 28 with the Rev. Robert Molsberry officiating. Burial was in Rose Hill cemetery, Eagle Grove, where services were conducted by the Rev. Scott H. Hall. Pallbearers were Grant White, Bill Diedrichsen, Norman Hamiel, Jim Cary, Larry Martens and Lyle Grove. Honorary bearers were Peter and James Gill, John Shaw and Ira Larson. Betty Trevathan was organist. A Masonic service was held at First United Church of Christ Nov. 27.

Mr. Gill died at Mercy Medical center, Cedar Rapids, Nov. 24.

The son of James F. and Lenora N. Northrup Gill, he was born at Garden Grove Oct. 3, 1897 and graduated from Garden Grove high school in 1915. He received his BA degree from the University of Denver in 1920 and his MS degree from Iowa State University in 1933.

He enlisted in the naval reserve Aug. 24, 1918 and was discharged as an aviation rigger Dec. 15, 1918.

He married Myrtle S. Paine at Garden Grove Oct. 15, 1926.

Mr. Gill taught and coached for 7 years at Colesburg, Eagle Grove and Nevada and was superintendent of schools for 14 years at Arnold's Park, Kingsley and Jordan. He served as superintendent of the Cedar county schools from 1948 to 1968 and as assistant superintendent for personnel for the Joint County School System (Linn, Jones, Cedar and Washington counties) in 1968 and 1969.

He was named as a "Friend of Education" from the Tipton Education association in 1980.

Mr. Gill was a member of the Tipton Lions club, the Tipton Rotary club, the Tipton Masonic lodge, the American Legion and Beta Theta Pi, national education association. He was a member of First United Church of Christ. He moved to Cedar Rapids in 1982.

He is survived by his wife; a daughter, Mrs. Kenneth (Elizabeth) Moore, Cedar Rapids; 5 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother and a son.
