1878 Cedar Co. History, Rochester twp, pg 725. Mathews, Thomas E., farmer, Sec 29, P.O. Tipton. Owns 285 acres of land valued at $35 per acre. Born in Virginia in 1814, came to Iowa in 1838 and located in Cedar co. Married Nancy Hill in 1845, she was born in Pocahontas co., VA in 1827. Have 8 children- Elizabeth, Josephine, Charley, Emma, Augusta, Thomas, Isaac, George W., lost four- Mason and Margaret and two in infancy. Members of the Methodist Church.
