I translated the following article from Der Carroll Demokrat, a German-language newspaper published in Carroll, Iowa, between 1874 and 1923. The article was originally published on Friday, 6 January 1882. Any information in brackets or notes at the end are my own explanations. It reads as follows:

We take the following from the Manning Monitor: Last Saturday a farmer named John Fransman, who lives six miles west of Manning, came to town with his wife and a load of wheat. He came without difficulty until he reached the steep hill on this side of the stream near town. While he was attempting to come up the hill, he found that the load of wheat was too heavy for his team. The horses stopped just long enough so that his wife could jump from the wagon, and then horses, wagon, and wheat went headlong into the stream. With great effort and the assistance of several men who came by, one horse was saved from drowning. The wheat fell into the water, where one sack is still lying, while the others were fished out. This is not the first team that has had to deal with this terrible situation.
