Robert Vernon Main
(October 8, 1936 - September 18, 2024)Robert Vernon Main, beloved husband, father, and community leader, passed away on Wednesday, September 18, 2024, at Accura HealthCare in Carroll. He was born on October 8, 1936, in Verndale, Minnesota, to Robert and Lucille (Gates) Main. Vernon spent his early years in Verndale before moving to Iowa, where his family farmed outside of Lanesboro. He attended Lanesboro School and later graduated from Lake City High School in 1956. On June 23, 1957, Vernon married Patricia Lou Higgins, and together they built a loving family. He was a dedicated member of the Lanesboro community, serving as the fire chief of the volunteer fire department, a town councilman, and later as mayor. He also served as Chairperson on the trustees for the Methodist Church in Lanesboro. His commitment to public service reflected his deep love for his hometown. Vernon had a diverse and accomplished career, beginning with his early work in construction, where he contributed to the building of elevators and bridges, as well as tiling and drainage projects. After his marriage, he took a position at a dry cleaner in Carroll. Once his three children were born, he became an assistant manager at Joyce Lumber Yard in Lake City. His career continued to flourish at Moorhouse Lumber Yard (later Schon Lumber Company) in Lanesboro, where he managed a carpenter crew and held the role of manager. Vernon was known for his hard work, devotion to his family, and love of the outdoors, which he shared with Patricia, their three children, and grandchildren through camping trips and scenic vacations. Vernon is survived by wife Patricia Main; daughters Roxann Hacker Gomez, Lori Main; grandchildren Cassie (Blake) Freml, Tyler (Lizzy Jones) Main, Caitlin Main, Emily (Pat) Gallagher, Jason (Aaron) Burns, Gage (Presley) Lamberty; great-grandchildren Theodore and Maeve Freml, Savannah and Liam Gallagher, and dog Punky. He is preceded in death by parents Robert and Lucille (Gates) Main; siblings Thomas Main, Amy Jean Bruce, Merrilue Laughlin, Dorothy Kraft, John Main; and son Steven Main. As per Vernon’s wishes, the family will hold a private graveside service.
