Attempted Burglary at Aplington, Iowa
APLINGTON, Ia., Oct 31, -An attempt was made last night between 9 and 11 o’clock to break open the large iron safe belonging to S. L. Kemmerer in the office of Capt. Whaley, at this place. The burglars first broke into the blacksmith shop, taking a sledge, punch, tongs, &c., to pry open the doors of the office, breaking the door and lock. He then attacked the safe, braking off the combination lock, when he was interrupted by the appearance of Abraham Kemmerer, who was waiting to load a car of hogs and happened to go to the office. He was met by the burglar in the door, with a pistol in his hand, and ordered to stand back. Kemmerer being unarmed stepped back two or three steps, when the burglar, passed him, menacing him all the time, till he could make his escape by going to the rear of the office. He then made for the river and woods nearby at a rapid gait. An alarm was given immediately, but the burglar escaped. No suspicion rests on any one here, at the burglar was a stranger to Kemmerer. Kemmerer will be obliged to get experts to open his safe for him now.
