OPA Error May Close Hazleton's Only Meat Market
E.L. Allen, Hazleton's only meat market owner, will be forced to close his store after tomorrow until he receives further word from OPA. Allen, who took over the meat market in Febraury, wrote to the OPA Feb. 11, requesting a license for butchering. He received a letter stating that a license was not required.
When the April 26 ruling that all butchers must be licensed went in to effect, Allen wrote to the OPA requesting an application form. The other day he received a reply prohibiting him from butchering until his application has been approved by the regional office in Chicago. With the letter was enclosed a form, MC-10, which he was supposed to fill out and send in for approval.
Reading over the enclosed form, Allen discovered a clause which stated that if he had begun operation between September 1, 1945 and April 25, 1946, he should not fill out that form, but a different one, MC-11. In other words, they had sent him the wrong form.
Friday he sent in the correct form, It is highly uncertain when he will receive it, and when he does there will be another delay until he secures approval. At present he has a little pork left and no beef at all.
Because the only things Mr. and Mrs. Allen sell outside of their own meat are commercial brands of bacon and ham, bread and a few other items, the have no alternative but to close their store.
Mr. and Mrs. Allen, who have three children, lived on a farm near Hazleton before moving to town. They still own and operate their farm. The have lived in that vacinity all their lives.
