Marion Ruth Blaess, age 82, of Boone, Iowa, passed away peacefully at her home surrounded by her family on Saturday, November 3, 2012.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Friday, November 9, 2012 at Augustana Lutheran Church located at 309 S. Greene Street in Boone with Rev. Dick Dahle officiating. Burial will be at a later date.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, November 8, at Walter ~ Schroeder Funeral Home located at Fifth & Story Streets in Boone from 5 to 8 p.m. with family present.
Marion was born on May 4, 1930 in Lyons, Nebraska, the daughter of William Z. and Ruth (Paine) Larsen.
Marion graduated from Webb High School in 1947. She began college at Buena Vista in Storm Lake and continued at Drake University where she graduated in 1951. Marion taught at Truesdale and Albert City Schools. She also taught Adult Basic Education classes in Boone for 25 years.
On July 3, 1954 Marion was married to Robert L. Blaess in Decatur, Nebraska. The couple moved to Boone. Marion retired from teaching in May 2000.
Marion was a member of the Augustana Lutheran Church of Boone for 58 years. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary for 30 years, a 60 year member of the Order of the Eastern Star, and a member of W.E.L.C.A.
Marion's hobbies included sending cards, she was known as "the card lady", her piggy bank collection, spoon collection and antique tin collection.
Marion enjoyed watching sports and the teams of the Hawkeyes, Cyclones and Bulldogs. She especially enjoyed watching any activities involving her grandkids.
Marion is preceded in death by her parents; her husband; her twin brother, Wesley W. Larsen; her granddaughter, Krista Perkins and her great-grandson, Xander Perkins.
Marion is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Maureen K. and Gary Smith of North Aurora, Illinois; her son and daughter-in-law, Daniel R. and Ashley Kim Blaess of San Diego, California; her son and daughter-in-law, Andrew R. and Patty Blaess of Waukee, Iowa; her three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, memorials have been established for the Augustana Lutheran Church in Boone or the Mercy Hospice of Des Moines in memory of Marion Ruth Blaess.
