Are you sure they lived in Appanoose county? They weren't in the 1856 state census or 1860 federal census there.

I did find their marriage in Sangamon County, IL on 10/31/1849 and he enlisted in the 30th Illinois Regiment there in 1862. He died at Lake Providence, LA on 3/31/1863 of "Febris Typhoidis".

Lavina married Phelip (sp) Talkner on 7/7/1864 in Sangamon County. Lavina applied for a Civil War widow's pension in Illinois on 8/10/1865 listing herself as the widow of John Large of the 30th Regiment so it doesn't appear she was married as of that date.
