1. All of Mystic was considered pretty rough but I don’t know I would call it meanness. It was almost completely a mining town. I doubt if there was much, if any, company housing. Unlike mining towns in other parts of the country which had a single large mine operated by one company, mining in Appanoose county was done by lots of companies in many mine locations. There was early union activity there so that might have led to violence. Here’s a history of mining in Appanoose County from 1908.

2. The person I talked to has a book with pictures that she’s sending me. I’ll check it out when I get it.
3. That would be the United Brethren Church.
4. There was the Strand movie theater there but I don’t know if it was operating as early as 1916. The Majestic theater in Centerville dates to 1913 and Centerville was three times as large as Mystic. They might have gone there on the Inter-urban train that ran between the two towns.
Here's the web site of the Appanoose County Historical and Coal Mining Museum. It's a real interesting place. I think it's closed for the winter now but you could contact them and find out more. They have lots of books published on the history of the county.
