The death of Andy Kepner, Wednesday afternoon, January 11, 1939, climaxed a courageous fight against disease which Mr Kepner has waged for several years Both legs had to be amputated in a curative measure against gangrene resulting from diabetes, but he faced a new life in a wheel chair with courage and hope, Since Christmas he had an attack of flu which left him very weak and to so cheerful in the fight for life. The last few days the severe cold developed into pneumonia and he slept quietly away in coma Wednesday afternoon at his home.
Andrew J. Kepner, son of Gideon and Mary Ann Kepner, was born in Covington, Indiana December 10, 1953. When a small boy he came with his parents to southwest Iowa and 44 years ago came to Corning. He was married to Alice Hull, March 24, 1876 at Bridgewater, Iowa and for the past 44 years this has been their home. For forty of those years Mr. Kepner was employed as a stone cutter in the monument works in what is now the O. W. Williams building. Albert Schaffer was then owner of the works He continued to work there until his health failed a few years ago.
Mr. Kepner is survived by his widow and five children. One daughter, Eva Keefe, Mrs. Walter Keefe, preceded him in death a number of years ago, The living children are: Tracy Kepner of Corning, Percy of Creston, Volley of Pueblo, Colorado, Eddie of David City, Nebraska, and Mrs. May Drew of Corning. He is also survived by 16 grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren; 2 sister, Mrs. Cora Winn of Portland, Oregon and Mrs. Clara Means of Fontanelle; three brothers William Kepner of Rothville, Missouri, Ralph of Rosetown, Canada, and Albian of Moosejaw, Canada; also many nieces and newphews and a host of friends who grieve with the family.
Mr. Kepner was converted and he and his granddaughter, Marie Drew were baptized at the same time into the membership of the Christian Church. This has always formed a strong tie between them. He has taken much joy in his associate with the church and the interest of the church since becoming a member.
Mr Kepner has been a fine hard working type of citizen, one whose honesty and integrity has won him the respect of al and the love of many.
His interest has centered in his home and work, but he was a friendly nature which accepted everyone in need as his neighbor.
Funeral services were at 3 p.m. Friday, January 13, in the Christian Church in Corning with Rev. Thurman Brown, pastor of the Baptist Church in charge. Music was furnished by Chester Fox, Charles Wallace, Carl Bickford, and Bill Barker, with Florence Cooper at the piano Pall bearers were Art Leonard, Frank Johnson, J. E. Anderson, Wilbur Crouse, Perry James, and George Cole Burial was made in the Walnut Grove Cemetery.
