  • Roese Plot aka Roese Family Vault
    page 396

'Woodmansee' lists 2 known burials, but also states that there are additional "possible" burials. Other burials, along with supporting sources, are:
Laura Roese born 1853 & died 4/28/1916. Her obit gives interment ".. in the family vault, where repose the ashes of her parents and one brother." Her death certificate names her parents as Herman & Charlotte (Schrekal / Stricker) Roese. The death cert. gives Laura's burial place as "vault on home place. Laura's parents, Herman & Charlotte, appear on the 1860 U.S. census, but Charlotte is not in the household by 1870. Herman died in 1877.. His obituary infers his wife is already deceased and gives his burial place as the family vault on his farm. (S.F.)
'Woodmansee' also suggests other possible burials: Anna R., Otto & Richard.
Richard Roese served in the Civil War, and removed to Colorado after his discharge. He filed for a pension in 1892 from Colorado. He may have died in 1928. Edward Roese & his wife Augusta (Hartfiel) Roese removed to North Dakota in 1912, and then to Sioux City in 1915 where they are both buried in Oak Hill cemetery, Sioux City, IA. (source: Augusta's obituary) (S.F.)

Farrel, Ada Lode (1861 Nov 25-1862 Nov 16)
    Farrel, Bayard (1857 Aug 30-1860 May 06)
Ada & Byron were each entered twice in Woodmasee, with different surnames & slightly different DOD for Byron. Correct surname is Farrer. They are the children of Samuel M. & Catherine Farrer/Farrar. (R.O.)

    Fleming, Richard (?- 1897 Apr 07)
It appears that Woodmansee likely misinterpreted an obituary published in the Lansing Mirror. It reported the Fleming death occurred in Jefferson Township, but did not specify which county or state. Richard Fleming’s death is recorded by Jefferson Township, Houston County, Minnesota – where he lived. Thus, his burial is presumed in the Catholic St. Patrick’s cemetery in Jefferson Township, Minnesota with other family members. The counties are adjacent, with the state line separating them. In Minnesota, the southern Jefferson Twp boundary forms the state line with Iowa. Residents of this Minnesota twp lived closer to Iowa towns than to Minnesota towns. The early residents of this Minnesota twp actually had New Albin, Iowa, mailing addresses. Lansing, Iowa, was the next-larger town for trade and a newspapers. Original Jefferson Twp. Houston co. MN records regarding Richard Fleming’s life and death have been examined. He was a recorded landowner and member of the local St. Patrick’s Catholic Church; his father in buried in St. Patrick’s cemetery. (Father James’ tombstone included the inscription, “Erected by his beloved wife and son Richard.”) This Minnesota township recorded Richard’s death date, but not an interment site. Catholic burial sites were presumed in St. Patrick’s Catholic cemetery; it was the township’s only church and cemetery. Richard’s burial is NOT recorded at the cemetery for St. Joseph’s Catholic church in New Albin, Iowa. This would be the only alternative Catholic burial option. Jefferson Twp in Allamakee County, Iowa, is not adjacent to the state boundary with Minnesota. There is no reason why his burial would have been located this far away from his home – at least for 1897. The current Clerk for Jefferson Township in Allamakee County, Iowa, was contacted regarding the records for the Rossville Cemetery – it is not a church graveyard, nor Catholic. She only has maps for its current burials, and confirmed that no detailed record exists for their old part of this cemetery. They simply no longer bury in that area. Thus, Dale Woodmansee could not have accessed original burial records placing Richard Fleming’s last resting place in Iowa. A burial plot map does exist for this old part of the Rossville Cemetery; however, it is dated 1886, prior to Richard Fleming’s death. Thus, the Minnesota burial is deemed correct. Evidence substantiates a Minnesota burial and suggests the source of a misattributed Iowa burial. Richard Fleming had no family or link to the Iowa location, and the Rossville cemetery is not Catholic.

    Kelly, William M. (1833 Mar 07-1907 Jan 18)
William M. Kelly was born April 7, 1833, not March. (C.E., gggrandaughter of William Morton Kelly)

    Skinner, Jennie B. (1857 Aug 15-1928 Mar 05)
This is Eugenia Belle 'Jennie' (Biggs) Skinner. Her correct burial place is Maple Hill cemetery. She is buried with her parents David & Elizabeth (Fitch) Biggs. She was the widow of Dr. Hickman S. Skinner. Dr. Skinner was from PA had only been in Allamakee co. for a few years when he died in 1884. He may be buried in Indian Creek cemetery, Mill Run, Fayette co., PA, which is where his parents Abraham & Hulda (Stull) Skinner are buried, but this needs verification. (R.O. & S.F.)

Stull, Elijah Rowan - 4/5/1851-4/14/1930 and his 1st wife, Elizabeth (Beall) Stull - 4/23/1850-1/5/1912 died in Decorah, Winneshiek co.; neither are listed in 'Woodmansee' and both are buried in unmarked graves. Much more information about them is on his

Stull, William T. (1860 Jan 17-1863 Feb 25) Correct dates are 1/17/1860 - 10/21/1860. 1860 U.S. census reports a middle initial of "S" for this William Stull, aged 4 mos.
Stull, William (1819 Aug 30-1901 Aug 02) Correct DOD is 08/20/1901 and middle initial given as "T" per his obituary in the Waukon Standard 8/28/1901.

    Watkins, George (1831-1887)
    Watkins, George (1817-1873)
According to the Civil War roster & record, George Watkins was age 44 when he enlisted in 1862. That would make his year of birth approximately 1818. Census records appear to confirm 1818 as an approximate year of birth. The listing for Rossville Cemetery has two George Watkins listed: George Watkins, born 1831, died 1887 Remarks: Co. I, 27th IA Inf (the gravestone photo matches this listing) George Watkins, born 1817, died Mar. 8, 1873. Remarks: NM Based on the year of birth I would think this would be him. Is the military headstone with the wrong George Watkins? The two burial listings would indicate to me that possibly there were two George Watkins in Allamakee co., but I did not find evidence of that on the census records. i.e. I did not find two George Watkins in the same years on the census records. However, there are enough discrepancies in the census records that I did find, that it is possible that the census records I found are for two different (very similar) families. There is not enough age difference between the two for them to be father and son. More research may clear this puzzle. (E.J., more on Elaine's
    27th Iowa website)

    Olskum, Nels (1829 Jan 28-1899 Dec 19)
Surname & death date are incorrect in 'Woodmansee'. The surname should be Olslund. From Allamakee County Court House Death Records, Book 2 pg 5: Nels Olslund, 70y 6m 2d, born Hønefoss, Buskerud, Norway, died Dec. 9, 1899 Makee Twp., from cancer. Burial Round Prairie Cem. No listing for parents. His wife, Marie (nee Holen), Bk 3 pg 48, 72y 3m 27d, b. Apr 6, 1839 Norway, died Aug 3, 1911 of kidney failure, widow. Burial Round Prairie Cem. His son, Johan Martin, 1858-1871, is probably interred in Round Prairie, also. Bechtel, infant son (1926 Mar 03-1926 Mar 03)
He is buried in the Postville cemetery, Area B. Gravestone inscribed March 2, 1926, rather than March 3. (R.O.)

    Becker, Louisa (1878 Jun 07-1895 Apr 09)
Her gravestone appears to have DOD 1896 Apr 09, although the 6 could be a five. Allamakee Death Records have DOD 1895 Apr 09. Her age is listed as 6y 10m 20d so she was not born in 1878. (R.O.)

    Goeke?, Robert (1916-1935)
Robert Goeke (1916 Nov 21 - 1935 Jun 05) is buried in the Postville cemetery. Sources: Alamakee County Death Records & obit in the Waukon Democrat. In the Woodmansee erroneously has him listed in the Salem cemetery (R.O.)

  • Smith Cemetery notes

    Bray, Edith (1873?-Sep 15 - 1922 Jun 20)
Edith Pearl (Wallace) Bray, w/o Victor Bray may be buried in Sixteen cemetery. Records are conflicting and a gravestone has not been found for her in either cemetery. The Woodmansee record indicates her county death record gives Smith cemetery; her Death Certificate (familysearch.org) gives Sixteen cemetery; her obituary states funeral "from her home at Sixteen", but does not specifically give final burial place. Interested researchers should resolve these conflicts to their own satisfaction. (R.O.)

Harley Robert Ferguson was born Dec. 4, 1923 and died Aug 29, 1942 of injuries received in a car accident. Woodmansee book shows him buried Smithfield. Allamakee County Death Records show place of burial as I.O.O.F. cemetery. There is not a cemetery marker for him in Smithfield or the I.O.O.F. cemetery near Rossville. There is a grave stone in Monona City cemetery for Harley R. Ferguson 1923-1942 in the I.O.O.F. section. (R.O.)

    Evans, John (1852 Jun 12-1907 Aug 05)
According to his obit in the Allamakee Journal and his entry in the Allamakee Death Records, John Evans is buried in the Minert (Post twp.) cemetery, rather than Smithfield (R.O.)

    Garms, Robert C. (March 9, 1924 - October 4, 1996)

    Halvorson, infant
Not included in Woodmansee - Allamakee Death Records record infant Halvorson born & died on August 13, 1941. Place of burial Smithfield cemetery. The parents of this child were Palmer Halvorson and Marion Ricker. (R.O.)

    Lepart, Anna (1890-1955)
    Leppert, Ralph (1899- ?)
Lepert should be Leppert. Anna was the 2nd wife of Ralph Henry Leppert who died 12-30-1988 at McGregor, Iowa. He was married 1st Louise unknown, 2nd to Anna A. (Borg) Johnson, and 3rd to Martha K. Oesterle, who survived him. See the
gravestone on the Iowa Gravestone Photo Project for more info. on these relationships.
-contributed by Reid R. Johnson, grandson of Anna Leppert

    McShane, Milton (1927-1938)
notes: This is actually Milton Arthur CARTER 1927 Aug 11-1938 Apr 06. His gravestone has only his given name inscribed and it is near the McShane stones, likely causing the error. Milton Carter has an obit in the Waukon Democrat & Waukon Republican-Standard. (R.O.)

Nagel, Amos W. (1862-1930) - see notes below for "Winnifred"

Rose, George Hamilton (1882 Feb 12-1944 Jun 02)
Also listed in Oakland - 1920 Addition. Oakland is more than likely his actual burial place, with his wife Jennie (d. 1985). Researchers should independently confirm his burial site. (R.O.)

Rose, Jimmie (born & died 1930 Oct 01)
'Woodmansee' dates are incorrect. His gravestone has Oct 7 - Oct 11, 1930; his obit states he lived 3 days.

    Winnifred, L. (1899-1902)
    Winnifred, Louis F. (1900-1923)
    Winnifred, Sophia (1878-?)
Surname for all 3 is NAGEL - Lois Winnifred Nagel, Louis F. Nagel and Sophia Nagel. Sophia (1878-1967) was the wife of Amos W. Nagel. L. Winifred & Louis F. were their children. Amos also has an inscription on the gravestone. The surname Nagel clearly marks this gravestone, but it appears to be relatively new, and may not have been there when Woodmansee surveyed the cemetery. (R.O. & S.F.)

    Wintrick, Fred A. (1872-1952)
Woodmansee has the death date wrong. The correct date is July 8, 1948. His gravestone, an obit in the Waukon Republican-Standard and his death certificate all give 7/8/1948. (R.O.)

  • Spaulding Cemetery notes

    Hulce, Eliza J. (1829 Jan 12-1902 Jun 12)
This is Eliza J. Hulse, she is not buried in Spaulding cemetery, she is buried in Council Hill cemetery, Clayton County, IA. The contributor of a photo of her
gravestone read her dates as Oct 8, 1827 - Jan 12, 1902. Researchers should confirm which dates are correct. (R.O.)

    McGowen, William R.
    McShane, William August

Woodmansee lists both names with same DOB and only slightly different DOD. Allamakee Death Records have: William August McShane, 10/23/1850 - 04/19/1933. Obituaries in the Waukon Democrat and Waukon Republican-Standard spell the surname as McGowan & his wife Hester Ann (nee Biccum). The 1930 US Census, Taylor twp. enumerates William (age 79) & Hester McGowan (age 80). Other Iowa State & US census 1895 thru 1920 also give surname as McGowan. Woodmansee does not list the burial place of Hester. (R.O. & S.F.)

    Wachter, Anton (1857 Apr 28-1925 Sep 16)
Anton is buried in Cherry Mound, St. Pius cemetery with surname Walker. There is a handwritten Allamakee County Death Record for him and a obit in the Waukon Democrat. The death record indicates the spelling as Wachter burial Spaulding. The obituary spells his surname as Wachter but gives burial place in Cherry Mound.

    Batteen, Ralph

The Batten children who died in 1903 are buried in Holy Cross Catholic cemetery, Iowa twp. There are stones for each one there and there is a Death Record for Grace and Ralph. Woodmansee has listed them in both Holy Cross and St. Joseph's, but there is no indication they were among the bodies re-interred. (R.O.)

    Brennan, John
According to the Woodmansee book page 64, John Brennan is listed as being buried in St. Joseph's Catholic cemetery in Iowa Township. There is no grave there for him and the Catholic church has no record of him there. He is buried with his wife Ernestine, in New Albin Cemetery. (see also New Albin cemetery corrections) (L.H.)

    Donovan, Minnie M. (1881-1969)
    Sattler, Minnie (1881 Nov 20 - 1969 Jan 12)
The same woman. Allamakee Co. Death Records give husband's name as Joseph Sattler. He was her 2nd husband. She was 1st married to Frank Donovan & they are buried together in St. Joseph's cemetery. The 1920 US census enumerates the Donovan's in Crooked Creek twp. Houston co. MN. Frank died in 1929, and Minnie Donovan is a widow on the 1930 US census, still in Crooked Creek twp. She remarried to Joseph Sattler & the 1940 US census enumerates Joseph & Minnie Sattler in Crooked Creek twp. Houston co. MN. Additional info. from Minnie's death record: died in Waukon, funeral by Burke Funeral Home. Her parents were Joseph & Pauline (Troendle) Hammel. The dates given by Woodmansee for Minnie Sattler are Minnie Donovan's correct dates. - submitted by Richard O'Brien (death records) & S. Ferrall (census info.)

    Higgins, Rachel (?-1945 Dec)
Woodmansee has incomplete information for her: Rachel Higgins was born 09/01/1881 and died 12/07/1945 in LaCrosse, WI. (R.O.)

    Kenney, Josephine (1885 Apr 20-1967 Oct 07)
She is not buried in St. Joseph's, she is buried St. Patrick's Cemetery, Houston County, Minnesota and has a gravestone in that cemetery. (R.O.)

    Lager, Johanna Donovan (1871-1944)
Her DOB is incorrect in Woodmansee, it is February 19, 1869 according to her obit and the 1870 census. (E.W.)

    McKenna, Donald G. 1844-1986 Jan. 18?
McKenna, Susan Marie 1866 April 5-1980 August 7

    Moore, Patrick (1855-1925 Dec)
Woodmansee doesn't give his full dates. Patrick V. Moore was born May 20, 1855 & died December 28, 1925. (R.O.)

    Pitewite, Julia (1873-1939)
    Twite, Julia
    (? -1939 Oct)
    Pitewite, Samuel (1879-1944)
    Twite, Samuel P. (1880 Oct 24-1944 Jan 27)
Julia Pitewite is the same person as Julia Agnes (Higgins) Twite, born March 23, 1873 & died October 26, 1939 in LaCrosse, Wisconsin. Samuel Pitewite is the same as Samuel P. Twite born 1880 & died January 27, 1944 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. They are listed under both names in the Woodmansee book. The couple are enumerated in census records with surname Twite and not Pitewite. Samuel P. Twite registered for the draft in WWI and gave his birthdate as January 17, 1880, rather than the date given in Woodmansee.
    (R.O. & S.F.)

    Ross, Adaline (1856 Dec 16-1914 Nov 18)
Burial is in the New Albin City cemetery where she has a gravestone inscribed Addie Ross wife of J. Ross, 12/16/1858-11/16/1914. The Woodmansee book and her obit in the Waukon Republican erroneously give burial place as St. Joseph's cemetery. Woodmansee also has her on the city cemetery list, but with incorrect dates. (R.O.)

Veronica A. (Hagen) Scheele 07/26/1911-10/07/1984, is not buried in St. Joseph's. McLaughlin, Honor, 6-3-1864,    Hard to read (6/3/1864 is death date) Inscription:  "Honor, the beloved wife of Wm. McLaughlin, died June 3, 1864, Age 35 years." Woodmansee attributes this burial for William, instead of his wife.
McLaughlin, Hugh,  4-3-1866,  Hard to read (4/3/1866 is death date)
McLaughlin, Catherine, “beloved wife of John McLaughlin, of Carrowkeel, Co. of Mayo, Ireland  (from a rubbing, 2003)
    -submitted by Kathy Maurer

Danaher, Margaret, I do have a photo of Margaret Danaher's tombstone and the dates on it are: born Feb. 1814 & died June 22,1900.  The 1814 doesn't look at all like an 1874, so maybe Mr.Woodmansee or a helper transcribed it incorrectly from notes. She was the wife of Thomas Danaher. Also.. Woodmansee lists a Margaret Danaher: 1851 Apr 27-1925 Feb 13 AND a Margaret McLaughlin nee Danaher 1851 Apr 27-1925 Feb 13. Kathy Maurer, who is descended from Marg. Danaher McLaughlin pointed out they were one in the same.  One says DR (death record) and the other CR (church record) so perhaps one identified her by maiden name?  So I would say they are duplicates. (M.W.)

    Kumph, Joseph & Josephine (?- 6-Jul-06)
The twins were born and died July 5, 1922 per
    Obituary (contributed by L.A.)

McKenna, Hugh, I would suggest that his correct death date is March 7, 1898, rather than 1888 as in Woodmansee. Two children of Hugh & his wife Ann (Fitzgerald) were born after 1888 - Mary (b. 1892) & Hugh Leo (b. 1893 d. 1894). Hugh also appears with his family on the 1895 Iowa State census. (M.W.)

    Schulte, Caroline
, birth date given in Woodmansee is 1832 Jul 21, this should be 1852 Jul 21. (M.W.)

    Schulte, Hanna (1864-1901 Mar 11)
Johanna 'Hanna' (Colsch) Schulte died May 11, 1901 and not in March. Her obit was published in the Allamakee Journal, Wednesday, May 15, 1901, stating death occurred just a few days prior. (S.F.)

    Schwartzhoff, ?
    ,  1880 - 1949 Apr 30,  CR Mrs. Herman
Mrs. Herman Schwartzhoff was Mary Ann 'Molly' (Danaher) Schwartzhoff.  Her sister Catherine Danaher Schwartzhoff was married to Christian Schwartzhoff, Herman's brother.  Mary Ann 'Molly' and Catherine were the daughters of James Joseph Danaher and Anna Fitzgerald, both of whom are buried in that same cemetery. (M.W.)

    Schwartzhoff, Leo
    Schwartzhoff, Sophia
    Schwartzhoff, William Jr.

Spelling of surname is Schwarzhoff on each of their gravestones. William's inscribed DOD on stone is 2/27/1930, however 'Woodmansee', the Allamakee Co. Death Records & obits in the Waukon Democrat & Waukon Republican-Standard have DOD 2/27/1932. (R.O.)

    Bresnahan, Michael H. (1861 Jan 13-1936 Nov. 27)
The date of death in Woodmansee is incorrect. Michael Bresnahan died May 6, 1939 in Decorah. His wife Anna Maria (Burke) Bresnahan 1875 Nov 25-1931 Aug 15, died at Decorah. Sources: Allamakee Journal, Waukon Democrat, Iowa Gravestone Project. (R.O.)

    McCullough, Martha (1885 - 1944)
This correctly is Dr. Martha (McCullough) Link, 02/06/1885 - 12/01/1944; w/o Nicholas Link; d/o John & Bridget (Conway) McCullough. She is buried in the McCullough lot. Unknown where her husband is buried. ~Source: Death certificate (familysearch.org) (R.O.

    O'Meara, Cecelia Fitzgerald; 1899 Oct 21-1979 Sep 08
The birthdate for Cecelia O'Meara is 1889, not 1899.  I found that she is listed as 20 years old in the 1910 Census.  Her Social Security Death record indicates a birth date of 21 Oct 1889. (M.W.)

    Schulte, Ben (1946-1946)
Bernard 'Ben' Schulte was born and died at Waukon General Hospital on March 6, 1946. His parents were Bernard Schulte and Virginia Fitzgearld. Burial was handled by Howard Hanson. Woodmansee lists his burial in Hanover Catholic Cemetery. Allamakee County Death Records list place of burial as Dorchester Catholic Cemetery. Address of record for parents at time of burial was Dorchester, Iowa. (R.O.)

Schulte, Margaret Ann ( died 1963 Apr 19)
This is correctly Mary M. (Schulte) Schwartzhoff, 1890 Mar 26- 1963 Apr 19. Wife of Theodore C. Schwartzhoff & daughter of John A. & Johanna (Colsch) Schulte. She is buried Calvary Cemetery, Caledonia, MN. (R.O.)

    Ward, Vera W.(1895 May 04-1982 Jul 15)
Year of death is not correct. Mary Veronica 'Vera' Ward, d/o Wm Henry & Anna (Cavanaugh) Ward has a gravestone in St. Mary's cemetery, engraved as Vera M. Ward 5/4/1895-7/15/1962. The column "Iowa Deaths" published in the Cedar Rapids Gazette, 7/16/1962, this brief notice: "Vera Ward, 67, Bakke-Hanson". I could not find an obituary. She is also listed as buried in Mt. Olivet cemetery, which is not correct. (S.F.)

    Zoll, Angus (1877-1912)
This is correctly Agnes Ellen Bresnahan, 08/??/1878 - 06/24/1912. Parents: Timothy & Ellen (Stack) Bresnahan; cause of death "tuberculosis"; burial: Hanover ~Source: death certificate (familysearch.org). Her gravestone is in proximity to the Zoll monument which lead to the confusion in 'Woodmansee'. Her stone does not include her surname, only "Agnus 1877-1912" (R.O.)

    Zoll, Mary Angeline
    (1902 Apr 11 - 1905 Aug 17)
    Zoll, Margaret Angell (1902 Apr 11 - 1905 Aug 17)
The listing for Angelina Zoll in the
French Creek Methodist Cemetery is in error. The correct burial place is in St. Mary's Hanover, where Woodmansee has her listed as Margaret Angell Zoll.  Gravestone photo (D.Z.)

    Henrietta Kehrberg, Mrs.; 1828 Aug 17 - 1884 Jul 28
Julius H. Fehrberg & Henrietta Fehrberg (same dates as above)
These entries have identical birth and death dates. This is very suspect; the only difference appears to be the change in the first letter of the last name. Might I suggest there has been an error in the records.
    -submitted by Mr. Lynn Kehrberg
-new note: Lynn Kehrberg is correct, there are no stones for Fehrberg. Henrietta Kehrberg is a daughter of cemetery occupants, Johann Marten and Karoline Goettel Marten. Husband is Julius Heinrich Kehrberg... the dates by the "Kehrberg" listings are correct. (see also below) (S.G.)

    Kehrberg, Emil; 1881 Oct 15 - 1882 Jan 25
    Kehrberg, Herman J; 1853 Jun 10 - 1886 Oct 11 NM
As noted above, Julius and Henriette Marten Kehrberg were husband and wife. Herman J. Kehrberg is a nephew of Julius. Herman DOES have a marker in the cemetery. His son Emil James Garfield Kehrberg is on one side of the four sided stone and Herman J. on the opposite side. Herman's wife and Emil's mother was Bertha Goettel Kehrberg and moved to western South Dakota around 1905. (S.G.)

    Friederich, Carl; 1858 Dec 06 - 1864 May 03
The stone is actually for Carl Friedrich Goettel, son of Carl and Henriette Drehmel Goettel who are buried in Mays Prairie cemetery. "Carl Friedrich" is inscribed in an arc at the top of the stone and GOETTEL is across the bottom. (S.G.)

    Martin, Marie H.; 1873 Feb 20 1873 Apr 30
All of the above names are actually spelled MARTEN, though a couple of the children's stones are inscribed Martin. Johann Friedrich Marten was married to Karoline Henriette Goettel, sister of Johann Gottlieb and Julius C. Goettel. Charlotte Goettel Marten is a daughter of Johann Gottlieb and Johane Louise Goettel and the wife of Friedrich Carl Marten, son of Johann and Karoline. HERRMANN MARTEN [1865] is a son of Charlotte and Friedrich. On Charlotte's marker is also an inscription for "KIND MARTEN Oct. 1876"...... translation = Child Marten. This was also a child of Friedrich and Charlotte. "Fran H. Martin" is actually FRANZ HERMAN MARTEN, son of Ferdinand Marten [son of Johann and Karoline] and Johanne Goettel [daughter of Johan and Johane]. All the other children, Carl; Clara; Ida Cora; John R. [1860-1862]; and H. Marie Marten are children of Julius Carl Marten [son of Johann and Karoline] and Bertha Therese Goettel [daughter of Wilhelm Goettel]. There is NO stone for John R. Martin with the life dates of 1862-1881, nor do we have any family or church record of a family member with those dates. (S.G.)

    Meiers, August (1883 Sep 15-1903 Mar 12)
this is actually Augusta Meier / Meyer. Her correct dates are Sept. 15, 1832 - March 12, 1903.  She was nee Zichert and the mother of Bertha Meier Gruber, Wilhelmine Zehrendt Dee and Marie Zehrendt Schroeder (they are all buried in Oak Hill). Augusta's death record is in the

notes: Caroline Schmieden is Mrs. Herman Schmieden. The dates by Caroline's name above are those that appear on their stone [1824 - 1889 May 22] are her correct life dates. Maria Louise was one of their children. (S.G.)

    Steiber, Lena 1843 Oct 11-1909 Sep 15

notes: The correct and inscribed birth date is October 11, 1851. The date 1843 from Woodmansee is not inscribed on the gravestone. Lena was the wife of Henry J. Steiber. Her maiden name was Magdalene Luth, daughter of Christian Luth and Dorothea Durat. (S.G.)

    Lape, Louisa 1849-1941
there are gravemarkers for these burials in Village Creek cemetery, they are not on Woodmansee's list. Woodmansee does have Loeb, ? & Loeb, John listed, which are likely Elizabeth & John Lape. (P.M.)

    Magnusson, Johanna
    1844-Sept. 18, 1910

    Christine, Anna (1871-1936)

Correct surname for Anna & Martin is Melbostad. Both are also listed by Woodmansee as Melbostad, ? (?-? Sep 23 age 65, Mrs. Martin) and Melbostad, Martin G. (1869-1949 Jan 10) (R.O.)

    Clasjen, Ingeborg Anna
    Clasjen, Karl Gustav

Correct surname for Ingeborg & Karl is Clausen or Clauson. (R.O.)

    Kuraas, John Larson (1875-1946)
    Larson, John A. (?-1946)
John Larson (1875 Jun 26 - 1946 Aug 31) is buried Waterloo Ridge Cemetery. Woodmansee lists both John Larson and John Larson Kuraas. They are the same man. Allamakee County Death Records give his name as John Larson; father Andrew Larson & mother Lucy Sulhus. The name of the informant was Mrs John Larson. Funeral director was J. E. Engell-Spring Grove, Minnesota. His obituary in the Waukon Republican-Standard identifies him as John Larson Kuraas, as do the Waterloo Ridge Church Records. His wife was Anna (Flatberg) Larson, died 1959 & buried Waterloo Ridge. Neither he or his wife have a cemetery marker. Kuraas was likely the old family name or Norwegian farm name, and that John took the name Larson. (R.O.)
Hope this will clear things out: Kurås is the family name, and earlier they added the name of the father, so: Lars Olsen Kurås was father of Anders LarSEN Kurås and Randi LarsDATTER Kurås. John Larson Kuraas' original Norwegian surname is: Kurås (not sure about his first name but probably Jon or Johannes). He was son of Anders (Norwegian) / Andrew (U.S.A) Larsen Kurås (b.1828) and Lusie Olsdatter Haugen (b.1835) Lusie was daughter of Ole Henriksen Sulu. (from Hjørdis Kurås, Oslo, Norway, 10/8/12)

Same man, gravestone: Alf Myron Myhre, 1928-1951. SS Death record & Veteran Death Record dates 11/5/1928 - 02/16/1951. (R.O.)

    Nielsen, Hans (1839 Nov 26-1913 Aug 22)
    Nielsen, Johanna (1840 Sep 23- ?)
    Prestsather, Hans (1839 -1913 Aug 22)
    Prestsater, Johanna (1841-1923 May 23)
The correct surname is Prestseter, ie: Hans Nielsen Prestseter. Johanna was his 2nd wife. His dates are 11/26/1839-08/22/1913. (R.O.)

    Clausen, Petra C. (1875-1880 Feb 01)
    Olsdatter, Detrea (1874 Aug 18-1880 Feb 01)
Both entries are for the same child. Gravestone: Petrea Olsdatter, d/o Ole Clauson & Bereth Christofferson, 8/18/1874 - 2/4/1880. (R.O.)

    Opheim, Lena (1864-1934 Apr 21)
    Opheim, Myrtle
    (1897-1945 Mar 1)
Lena Opheim's dates are 1874-1944, per her gravestone & obit in the Mason City Globe Gazette, not the dates given in Woodmansee. Her daughter, Myrtle Opheim was born 03/03/1897 & died 03/01/1945, per Minnesota Death index. Both have gravestones in the Iowa River cemetery. The Woodmansee book has them listed in both Iowa River and Waterloo Ridge cemeteries. Their funeral services were held at Waterloo Ridge Church with burial in Iowa River cemetery. (R.O.)

    Pederson, Johanna (1843-1937)
    Peterson, Johanna (1844-1933 Mar 01)
The two entries are for the same woman, correctly Johanna (Olson) Pederson, wife of Mikkel Pederson. Her gravestone is engraved 1843-1933.

    Quandahl, Arthur K (1889-1894 Jun 03)
Woodmansee annotates this entry as WWI veteran. His
gravestone is inscribed with the same dates indicated by Woodmansee. He died prior to WWI, so could not have served, he also was only age 5 at death. (S.F.)
-updated 12/10/12: this was the first son of this name, there is another Arthur Knute Quandahl, born 3/30/1895 to the same couple. He died 03/06/1976 in Minneapolis, and was indeed a WWI vet, inducted May 1918. He is buried at Fort Snelling in Minnesota.

  • Waterville Cemetery notes
    page 543-549

    Grangaard, Andrew C. (1855 Aug 11 - 1932 Jan 13)
notes: Woodmansee incorrectly lists him as buried in Waterville cemetery with surname Grangaard, but also correctly lists him in the Cherry Mound cemetery as Andrew C. Grimsgaard. The Allamakee County Death Records are hard to read for this surname. He has obituaries in the Allamakee Journal & the Waukon Democrat. The two obits use the spelling Grimsgaard and give the place of burial as Cherry Mound. Andrew was married to Ellen McCormick (1864 Nov 06 -1940 Jun 27). Ellen is also buried in Cherry Mound cemetery. (R.O.)

Halvorson, Karen Petersmoen (1836 Oct 15-1927 Jan 27)
The correct date of death of Karen is January 27, 1926 Allamakee co. Deaths Book 4, page 62. Her obituary is in the Democrat, Wednesday, Feb 3, 1926. (L.R.)

    Lair, Adeline (1907 Aug 13-1976 Dec 19)
Adeline V. (Hendrickson) Uglum Lair is buried with her 1st husband Archie Uglum. After Archie's death, she remarried Bernard Clay Lair (1905-?) on 05/30/1969. She died at Los Angles, CA (R.O.)

    Pedersmoen, Christyan 1838-1918
His first name is correctly spelled Christian and his year of death should be 1908. In the obituary of his wife, Karen H. Petersmoen, Christian died in 1908. In the 1910 census Karen is a widow. (L.R.)

    Unterberger, Jacob (1839 Oct 03-1915 May 09)
Correct burial place is the Cherry Mound cemetery (R.O.)

Vorseth, Uldrikke Dahl (1866 Apr 19-1948 Jan 24)
notes: She is not buried in the Waterville cemetery. Allamakee co. Death Records give her dates as 1866 Apr 10 -1948 Jan 24, and indicate she is buried in Old East Paint Creek Cemetery. She has a gravestone there, as does her husband Albert Hans Vorseth. (R.O.)

    Bakke, Clara A. (1904-19--)
Clara Amanda (Knudtson) Bakke, born 5/15/1904, died 07/29/1996. She shares a gravestone with Ottenus Bakke, not Cornelius Bakke. (R.O.)

    Kikansrud: Clara M., Engebret T. & Ragnhild
The surname is spelled Rikansrud. The dates given by Woodmansee for Ragnhild are actually for her husband Tollef O. Rikansrud, who is not listed on Woodmansee's list. Ragnhild's gravestone is inscribed: March 31, 1823-January 7, 1888. (R.J.)

    Larson, Lars J. (1839 Dec 16-1927 Feb 16)
Correct burial place is Old West Paint Creek cemetery. Woodmansee also correctly lists him there. (R.O.)

    Leikvold, Ludvig (1893-1918)
His correct name is Ludwig A. Hilmo, s/o Arne & Rebecca (Holden) Hilmo. He died in Cherokee co. IA (R.O.)

    Smeby, Hans (1826 Jun 21-1893 Feb 02)
    Smeby, Hans (1926 Jan 26 -1926 Jan 26)
Hans Smeby has 2 gravestones - the large stone for Hans & his wife Helene was probably erected when she died. A smaller stone for him that is half-buried was his original marker. The smaller stone is inscribed with birthdate 06/26/1826, and the death date is not visible. Unless there also is an infant buried in the cemetery with the same name, I'm pretty sure that the second Woodmansee entry is in error and the entry 1826-1893 is likely the only Hans Smeby in this cemetery. Confirmation of my assumption would be appreciated. (S.F.) Added 02/17/2015 by Larissa Reutgen: "YOU are correct in your assumption. 1826-1893 the only Hans Smeby."

    Usgaard, Erik (1868 Aug 15-1869 Jul 01)
    Usgaard, Peder
    (1827 Aug 01-1898 Dec 01)
Usgaard, Peder Henningson (1825 Jul 23-1870 Nov 15)
The second entry is actually Peder's wife Ingeborg (1827-1898). Peder H. Usgaard, Ingeborg & their infant son Erik, all share a gravestone in WPC Synod. There is another, much newer gravestone with Peder & Erik's names & dates located in the Old West Paint Creek cemetery. Ingeborg's name is not on that stone although Woodmansee lists a Isabella Usgaard with the same dates as Ingeborg in WPC Synod. It is unclear which of the cemeteries Peder, Ingeborg & Erik are actually buried in.
Old Paint Creek church records & the miscellaneous OEPC & OWPC church records also record Peder's death but those records name him as Peder Hansenmoen (burial 11/12/1870), a surname not found in Allamakee county, and likely an error when the records were translated & transcribed to English. The intro. to these records further clouds his actual burial site. Finally, Woodmansee also records Peder H. Usgaard as Peder Henningson Aas in Old East Paint Creek cemetery. (R.O.)

    Bird, Florence (1894-1916)

This Florence O'Brien (1894 Aug 22-1918 Oct 17). She shares a gravestone with her sister Mary (O'Brien) Bird. They were d/o David & Margaret O'Brien. Florence died in Denver, Colorado. (R.O.)

    Butler, Margaret (1828-1888 Mar 09)
DOD on gravestone is very clearly 3/29/1883 (R.O.)

    Gallagher, Patrick (no dates)
His dates are 1810 - 1919, age 109 years, given in his
    death notice. (R.J.)

    Kilpatrick, Thomas (1815-1871 Aug 07)
He buried in Oakland (Main) cemetery, Waukon & has a gravestone there. Woodmansee also lists him correctly in Oakland, with slightly different dates 1816-8/8/1971 (sic - should be 1871). (R.O.)

    McDevit, Catherine (1807-1891 Mar 21)
This is Catherine McDevit Sammon, 1st husb. James McDevit (buried in West Ridge) & 2nd husb. John Sammon. John (1812-5/17/1882) is also buried in West Ridge, but is not listed in Woodmansee. Her gravestone is engraved Catharine w/o J. Sammon. John Sammon, Catherine Sammon & James McDevit are all listed on the same stone. (R.O.)

    McMorrow, Will (1885-1937)
Correct burial place for William McMorrow is Mt. Olivet cemetery, Waukon. Woodmansee also lists him correctly in Mt. Olivet. His gravestone has YOB as 1881 rather than 1885. (R.O.)

    McNuit, Mary (1832-1870)
I believe this is actually Mary McNutt Burke. There is a family history written by a Sr. Mary Leonard Burke, R.S.M., granddaughter of Michael Burke and Thomas Danaher.  She was in her 80s when she wrote the following in the mid-1960s. Her grandfather Michael Burke is buried in the West Ridge Cemetery, but nothing about his wife Mary McNutt Burke, who died in 1870. Sr. Mary Leonard wrote:
"Mary McNutt Burke died of a heart attack March 4, 1870.  She had been ill but a few days.    She was conscious and seemingly knew her death was near.    She remained peaceful and resigned. To her sister-in-law, Ellen Ryan, she remarked, as if taking some interest in civic affairs, "This is the date the president takes the oath of office.”  She joined those about her in fervent prayer and told them that death was near for her.  It was.  She is buried in the West Ridge Cemetery.  Grandfather had a nice monument erected for her.  At the time of her death she was in her thirties."
Sister M. Leonard Burke also verified Mary McNutt Burke's birthdate as 1832, born in Pennsylvania. Mary McNuit listed by 'Woodmansee' with the dates of 1832-1870 is very likely Mary McNutt Burke, especially if there is a nice monument to her, as Sr. Mary Leonard indicated. I don't have proof, short of examining the monument, but if anyone reading this can verify or check the cemetery for a monument please notify me.
(M.W. - researchers wanting to contact Matthew can find his email address on his
    personal website)
    -update by Allamakee coordinator:
this photo of the gravestone of Mary McNutt Burke confirms Matthew's note

    O'Neil, Stasia (1895-1946)
Stacia (Duffy) O'Neill, 1/29/1895 - 12/25/1946. She is also listed by Woodmansee buried in St. Mary's Lycurgus. Correct is West Ridge cemetery. She died in Burlington, IA and had an obit in 3 Allamakee co. newspapers; her funeral mass was at St. Patrick's in Waukon. (R.O.)

    Quigley, Owen (1827 - 1879 Sep 9)
Correct YOD is 1873. His death notice appeared in the North Iowa Journal, September 23, 1873. Surname in the notice was spelled Quigly. (S.F.)

    Ryan, Jerry (1929 Mar 15-1931 Apr 21)
This incorrect, the 1930 census list his age at 101 and the Allamakee Co. Recorder's records has his birthday listed as 3/15/1829 and death date as 4/21/1931 which is correct. Cause of death is listed as old age and general disability. Buried in West Ridge Cemetery 4/23/1931.  Courthouse also lists Ireland as birth place. (P.M.)

    Ryan, Peter (1845 1909-Dec 16)
    Ryan, Theresa V. Lemmon (1854 Jul 9 - 1932 Feb 11)
    Schulte, Peter J (1852 Nov 10-1909 Dec 16)
    Schulte, Teresa V. (1854 Jul 9 - 1932 Feb 9)
Terresa V. nee Lannon, d/o John Lannon. Allamakee County Death Records and obits in the Waukon Standard-Republican & Waukon Democrat all give her surname as Ryan. Peter J. is also listed twice by Woodmansee with surnames Schulte & Ryan. Correct surname is Ryan. Peter & Terresa have 4 children buried in West Ridge; not all are listed in the Woodmansee book. See
    gravestone photo for names/dates. (R.O. & S.F.)

    Slattery, ? (1847-1922 Sep 24)
Rev. David John Slattery is buried in Mt. Olivet cemetery, Waukon & has a gravestone there. Woodmansee also lists him correctly in Mt. Olivet. His gravestone gives YOB as 1844, not 1847. (R.O.)

    Twoley, Cornelius (1830-1890)
My great g-grandfather Cornelius Twohey, is erroneously entered as Twoley -submitted by Pam Newcomer

    Urell, Harry J. (1898 Jan 25-1948 May 28)
Correct burial place is Mt. Olivet cemetery, Waukon. (R.O.)

    Brennan, Norma E (1887 May 09-1889 Jan 23)
notes - these dates are for Lavina E. Brennan, d/o D.J. & Mary, who also is listed by Woodmansee. There may not be a Norma Brennan buried in the cemetery. (R.O.)
    Brennan, Rita V. (1917 Aug 05-1977 Jan 24)
    Brennan, Robert C. (1939-1954 Sep 02)
    correct surname is Brannan (R.O.)

    Bulger, Fannie 1837-1899 Jan 10
    Bulger, Patrick 1818-1896 Dec 21
-notes:  I believe these Bulger's had their dates transposed by Woodmansee, I checked at the courthouse but neither one were listed in death records. The 1857 Iowa State census, Taylor twp. gave Fannie's age as 40 and Patrick's as 30. The 1860 US census gave Fanny's age as 42 and Patrick's as 36. Researchers should confirm all of the dates. (P.M.)

Cassidy, Devallo - not listed in Woodmansee; his inscription is on the gravestone of his 1st wife Catherine (Crowe) Cassidy in Wexford but he is buried in Queen of Heaven cemetery, Chicago. (R.O.)

    Cassidy, John W (1870-1957 Jul 14)
Cassidy, John William (1869-1951 Jul 18)
entries are the same man; shares a stone w/ 1st wife Bridget Kelly (1867-1906); he was next married to Mabel Highhouse who may have died in 1953; his dates on gravestone: 1870-1951 (R.O.)

    Collins, Timothy - s/o T. & B. Collins, not listed in Woodmansee but has a gravestone in Wexford. Aged 7y 8m 15d, died 3/31/1866 (R.O.)

Crowe, Mary Ann McNamara 1847-1928 Sep 17
The 1925 Iowa State census shows that Mary Ann McNamara is Thomas Crowe's mother and that she is Mrs. Patrick Crowe, not Mrs. Thomas Crowe as Woodmansee indicated. (P.M.)

Delaney, Sarah Artery (1863 Mar 25-1934 May 06)
year of death on gravestone is inscribed 1933, but Allamakee Death Records and obits in Waukon Democrat and Republican-Standard support the 05/06/1934 date. (R.O.)

Downs, Charles Kirk (1814-1865 Feb 27)
This is Charles Kirk (not Downs). His widow Mary remarried to John Downs, so that may be the issue.
Gravestone - contributed by Tom Miller

    Dugan, George
Duncan - Catherine, Catherine A., Christopher, Edward, Edward T., Elizabeth, Ester, John, Mary (2)
notes: the correct surname for all is Dungan (R.O.)

    Fitzpatrick, Mary (1851 Dec 03-1905 Oct 06)
    Fitzpatrick, Mary (1853-1909 Oct 06)
I believe there is only one Mary Fitzpatrick buried in Wexford, she has an inscription on a Fitzpatrick family monument. Her dates are very difficult to read. (R.O.)

    Guider, Willie (1890 Feb 10-1918 Dec 27)
Dates on the gravestone (shared with his parents, James F. & Johanna) has a DOB 02/10/1889. Allamakee Death Records give DOB 02/10/1890. (R.O.)

    Hawes, Joseph (1855 Jul 18-1913 Jul 21)
-note: spelling of surname on gravestone is Hawe. (R.O.)

    Heatly, Bernard (1845-1855 Feb 12)
    Heatly, Elizabeth (1811-1881 Mar 06)
    Heatly, Fannie (1853-1879 Mar 10)
    Heatly, Lucy (1850-1871 Aug 30)
    Heatly, William (1801-1851)
-note: Spelling of surname on gravestone is Heatley. Bernard's DOD is clearly 2/12/1859 (not 1855), no DOB on gravestone, but indicates his age was 10 years old. Elizabeth's obit gives year of birth as 1816, not 1811. Her name on gravestone is Eliza. She was w/o William E. Heatley. William's inscription includes middle initial E. and year of death may be 1854 rather than 1851. Bernard, Fannie & Lucy were children of William E. & Elizabeth. (R.O.)

    Joyce, Ellen (1852-1908 Nov 20)
There are birth date conflicts for Ellen Joyce. Allamakee Death Records & the Wexford Church records give 09/29/1840-11/20/1908. (R.O.)

    Kernan, Cecelia (1895-1908 Feb 23)
    Lester, Cecelia M. (1895 Nov 11-1908 Feb 21)
These are the same person, Kernan being the correct surname. Cecelia Marie Kernan has an Allamakee Death Record and an obit in Allamakee Journal. Cecelia Kernan also has a gravestone in Section 3, Row 20. It is inscribed Dau. of T. & C. Kernan and dates 11/11/1895-02/21/1908. (R.O.)

Keenan, James - not listed in Woodmansee but has a gravestone in Wexford. 4/17/1859-6/1/1877 (R.O.)

    Keenan, Bridget (1848-1929)

Mary Florence Mullarkey (1916-1917) and Bernard Michael Mullarkey (died @birth in 1938), share long rectange marker. They are the siblings of my Grandma Ann Mullarkey DeLong. There were 11 children born to my great-grandparents Benjamin and Mary McNamara Mullarkey; three who died as children: Mary Florence, Bernard Michael and Marguerite Genevieve (1923-1924). Florence being the first child they were able to afford a marker for her. Marguerite was the middle and Bernard was last, by then they could not afford to buy markers. About 45 + years ago their sister, my great aunt Betty purchased a stone for them and Florence's stone was put in the church basement. Four years ago aunt Betty told me that she felt bad that Florence's stone was in that dark old basement all alone. I offered to put it in my huge rock garden. She said that would be wonderful if you could do that. So I have Florence's stone in my rock garden. -contributed by Betty Palmer
