Transport Connolly Brings 6,200 Bodies,

Mostly from Belgium.

 

Washington, D. C. – (AP) – The Department of the Army announced yesterday the names of 60 Iowans whose bodies are being returned to the United States aboard the USS Joseph V. Connolly in accordance with the wishes of next of kin.

The first of the nation’s World war II dead to be returned from Europe will arrive at New York today when the Connolly enters New York’s flower-strewn harbor with the bodies of 6,200 American servicemen. Officials of the federal, state and city governments and the combined military services will join with thousands of citizens in honoring the heroic dead and their relatives.

Most of the bodies were returned from Henri Chappelle cemetery, Eupen, Belgium. Some of them were returned from Argentina, Newfoundland, central assembly point for the dead from Ireland and Newfoundland.

The bodies returned from Argentina have an “X” preceding the name.

Funeral Transport Docks at ‘Frisco

[The bodies of 3,208] American soldiers aboard a grey army transport which slipped through the mists of the Golden Gate Friday at San Francisco [were] the first group of men who died in world war II – the first to fall and the first to come home. [Eight of] southwest Iowa war dead aboard the funeral ship Honda Knot, inbound from Honolulu.

Six of the Honda Knot caskets will life in state in the rotunda of San Francisco’s city hall Saturday morning, representing the army, navy, coast guard, marine corps, air force and service-attached civilians. Within three days, with greatest reverence, all 3,028 caskets will be sent to final resting places. With each will go a guard of honor.

Three Bodies of War Dead Due Today

The bodies of three Waterloo boys will be among the 15 northeast Iowa veterans aboard the United States army transport Robert Burns which is scheduled to dock at New York City today, it was learned here yesterday.

The dead will be buried in private or national cemeteries according to the wishes of next-of-kin.
