Marvel Purvis Joining Waves
Miss Marvel Purvis, daughter of Mrs. Leila Purvis, 2112 West Third street, left Tuesday for New York to enroll in the Waves training school at hunter college, Bronx, N.Y. En route, she will spend a day in Chicago visiting the Misses Maxine Cowles and Jean Broshar, former Waterloo residents. Miss Purvis, a graduate of West high school and Iowa State Teachers college, Cedar Falls, during the past year taught at Manly high school in Manly, Ia.

Marvel M. Purvis, seaman second class in the Waves, is here on a 14-day leave from Newport, R.I., visiting her mother, Mrs. Leila Purvis, 364 Baltimore street. Seaman Purvis has been stationed at Newport for a week, having recently completed training at Great Lakes, Ill.

Marvel Purvis, petty officer third class in the Waves, has recently been promoted to seaman first class at Newport, R.I., according to word received by her mother, Mrs. Leila Purvis, 265 Baltimore street. Petty Officer Purvis is an instructor in the naval gunnery school where she teaches gunners mates recently returned from sea duty how to shoot more accurately.
Miss Purvis enlisted in the Waves in July 1944, and took her indoctrination training at Hunter college and Great Lakes naval training station. A graduate of Iowa State teacher's college, she formerly taught social and biological science at Manly, Ia.
