WOMEN IN SERVICE
Helen K. Nearad, storekeeper third class, is stationed with the ships company at the U.S. naval training station for WAVES at Cedar Falls. The daughter of Mrs. Emma E. Nearad, 409 East Ronalds street, Miss Nearad received her basic training at Hunter college in New York City. She later went to Milledgeville, Ga., where she earned her petty officer rating.

WAVES DETASSEL CORN -- Navy WAVES from the training school at Cedar Falls observed the second anniversary of the Waves Saturday and Sunday by helping detassel hybrid corn. Among those spending their liberty hours in a field near Reinbeck were four Iowans, (left to right) -- Helen Nearad of Iowa City, Dorothy Weaver of Belle Plaine, Clara Lou Morris of Gravity and Virginia Lampe of Iowa City.

Helen K. Nearad of the WAVES, daughter of Mrs. Emma Nearad, 409 Ronalds street, has been promoted from storekeeper third class to storekeeper second class at the naval training school at Cedar Falls, where she is stationed in the supply department.
Storekeeper Nearad, who is spending a weekend leave with her mother and grandmother Mrs. John Vrchoticky, has been in service one year today.

Helen K. Nearad, storekeeper first class in the WAVES, recently passed a 48-hour leave in Iowa City with her mother, Mrs. Emma E. Nearad and her grandmother, Mrs. John White, both of 409 East Ronalds street. Storekeeper Nearad is stationed at the redistribution center at the navy pier in Chicago.

Helen K. Nearad, storekeeper (D) first class, has been transferred fro the U.S. naval personnel separation center at navy pier in Chicago to the center located at Great Lakes, Ill. Storekeeper Nearad recently changed her rating to allow her to remain in the navy as long as possible. She is the daughter of Mrs Emma E. Nearad, 409 Ronolds street.

Miss Helen Kathleen Nearad Will Marry Mr. William Henry Mayo, III
Mrs. Emma C. Nearad of 409 Ronalds street is announcing the engagement and approaching marriage of her daughter, Miss Helen Kathleen Nearad, to Mr. William Henry Mayo, III, son of Mr. and Mrs. William H. Mayo, II, of Chicago, Ill.
The wedding will be an event of August 28 and will take place in St. Cornelius Cahtolica church in Chicago with the Rev. Joseph J. Hicky officiating.
Miss Nearad is a graduate of City high school and is a navy chief storekeeper in the WAVES, stationed at Great Lake, Ill. She will be released from navy duty this week after serving nearly three years in the service.
Mr. Mayo is a petty officer third class in the navy and is stationed at Great Lakes. He is also being discharged this week. Mr. Mayo studied two years at the University of Chicago. He will enroll this fall in the University of Iowa, where he will be a junior in the college of engineering.
