Two Nurses Here Become Ensigns in Naval Reserve
Two Waterloo registered nurses -- Misses Nona F. Anton and Doris Kern -- will report Dec. 6 to the naval hospital at Great Lakes, Ill., as ensigns in the nurse corps of the naval reserve, it was announced here Tuesday.
Miss Anton, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. C. Anton, La Porte City, has been employed as industrial nurse in the medical department of the John Deere Tractor Co. for three years.
A graduate of La Porte City high school, she completed her training in 1934 at Iowa Methodist hospital, Des Moines.
Miss Kern, daughter of Mr and Mrs Russell Kern, Traer, Ia., has served at Presbyterian hospital here since 1940. She is a graduate of the high school at Traer and the University of Iowa, Iowa City.

Traer -- Ensign Doris Kern, daughter of Mr and Mrs Russell Kern, has received her discharge in California after 19 months service as a navy nurse.

Former Nurse Here Repeats Vows at Traer
Traer, Ia. -- Miss Doris Kern, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Russel F. Kern of Traer, became the bride of Virgil M. Holen, son of Mr. and Mrs. Herman Holen of Bertrand, Neb., at a candle-light ceremony here in the Ripley Congregational church of Traer at 8 o'clock Sunday evening.

Mrs. Holen graduated from the school of nursing at Iowa university where she was employed a year following her graduation. She was on the staff at Presbyterian hospital in Waterloo, until her entry in the navy as an ensign. She received an honorable discharge from the navy July 3.
Mr. Holen was attending the University of California prior to his entry into the marine corps. He was honorably discharged from the marines as a lieutenant Dec. 3, 1945. Since then he has resumed his studies at the University of California.

Doris Evelyn Kern Holen was born Sept. 7, 1917 to Russell F. and Eva V. Morrow Kern. She died Mar. 23, 2002 and is buried in Sandstrom Cemetery, Phelps County, NE.
She was married to Virgil M. Holen. He was born Mar. 21, 1920 to Herman and Ellen V. Bjorklund Holen. He died Aug. 23, 1995 and is buried in Sandstrom Cemetery, Phelps County, NE.
