Ensign Jeanne Elder is Named Miss Guadalcanal
Ensign Jeanne Anne Elder, N.N.C. daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Elder, 1208 Mulberry avenue, has been named "Miss Guadalcanal" following her selection as a beauty contest winner in that territory, according to word received here today.
Ensign Elder was graduated from Nichols high school in 1937 and attended the University of Iowa during 1937 and attended the University of Iowa at Iowa City during the 1937 and 1938. She was graduated from St. Luke's hospital in Davenport with four months of affiliation with Children's Memorial hospital in Chicago.
After her graduation, she spent one year in nursing at University hospital in Iowa City. In January of 1943, she was assigned to the Navy Nurses Reserve corps at Oakland, Calif. In October of that year she joined the "regulars" and was transferred to Camp Pendelton, Navy Marine base, where she instructed corps men until being called overseas on Feb. 22, 1944.

MISS GUADALCANAL
Lieut. Jeanne Ann Elder, a navy nurse of Muscatine , Ia., became the United States marines' "Miss Guadalcanal" when she won a beauty-popularity contest. The selection climaxed a picnic and dance given by the marines for nurse on Guadalcanal in the Solomons.

Jeanne Anne Elder Poeltler was born Jan. 4, 1920 to Charles W. and Frances Kirchner Elder. She died Sept. 23, 1996 and is buried in Nichols Cemetery, Nichols, IA.
Lt. Elder was married to George J. Poeltler. George served with the U.S. Navy in World War II.
